When hunting in winter, I always carried a fire starting kit, some tinter, waterproof matches in a nicely machined case, often some parrafin or an old candle.  when I was in my black powder days, use to carry steel and flint.

Now, older and weaker, maybe wiser, I carry a bic lighter....much lighter in weight and cost.

ps I never HAD to spend the night in a cold woods.  But like a B scout, prepared

In all my hunting packs, belts and coyote vest/chair.
T have a pill bottle filed with cotton balls, or dryer lint and Vaseline. As well as a bic lighter. I also carry a lighter in my pocket all the time, that's a throw back to when I smoked.Big smile
I have used it but not in any kind of emergency.

A good fire starter is a glue (comes in a tube like tooth paste only lot bigger) that veterinarians use to stick ID numbers on cattle when working a herd to keep tract of those already treated. The ID number is on a tag made from ????? paper or ??? kinda like what the rodeo riders wear on their backs. Only source I know of is knowing a veterinarian who will give you some!Wink In my youth I used to carry pieces of birch bark in my pouch for a fire starter using the same item brear bear does to light them....a "BIC" disposable lighter.Embarrassed
