Portable electric fences?

Anybody know anything 'bout portable electric fences?

I'm interested in the kind that you set up around your camp when back packing. You also use them when using livestock to pack in your stuff...you put them around your beasts to keep them in.

I think that they are powered by D cells.

I've used 'em plenty in Outfitter camps.  Mules are smarter than horses, and the camp jacks had to run down the whole herd heading back to the trailhead on several occassions.  All's it takes is one smart cirtter to ruin everything.  I tie my ride high and tight at night, hobbles during the day in camp, picket while hunting.  I won't chase loose stock from some lughead tape corral failure.  If nobody's got a ride in the morning, jus' means I git to sleep in while the jacks walk 15 miles and ride 15 back with the stock.

I'll just add that horses are stupid, a little smarter than a cow, not as smart as a dog.  When they feel the shock, they often wreck the whole corral cause there's other stock blocking their escape.  If you get one, get a lot of tape and tie the dominant herd mare up at night.  The solar powered ones are worthless.  Bring extra batteries.

You might want to check with eric s on here.  He's usin' one to keep deer outta his garden.  I don't know about portable, but there ain't much to his fence.  I do know it's got a solar charger as well as batteries.
