I got the Vortex scope and picked up some Vortex medium rings. Squared it all up and tuque everything. I took out the bolt and visually bore sighted it. Went to the range. I got some custom shells loaded with 75 Eld-M. Their speed was 3355 on average. It only took 5 shots to get it on paper AND zeroed at 100, the first 5 shots through the rifle. I wanted a benchmark, so I shot 3 test factory. They were fast, but I only got a 1.2" group; there again, the first 8 shots. Then I tested three different powders with 77-grain bullets, 3 shells, and increments of 1 grain, each powder. 27 different shots. My speeds ran 2900 to 3050 fps. The best overall group was .69". BUT the Best of the worst was .80", only .11". I know 77 gr vs 75 isn't much, but 250 FPS, Humm. I actually plan to shoot 75's, but I did not have them when I loaded. I'm going to take the best powder in the test and maybe try two different powders and see how that turns out with my, 75gr I have now.
I'm looking for an inexpensive bullet and a powder I have LOTS of. It's going to be a high-volume gun. Varmints and P dogs, with some coyotes mixed in. I'm happy so far. It will be suppressed, but not yet. ![]() |

YES. I was hoping for a 1x7.5.
I'm guessing I could get over 4000 with a normal 22 weight bullet like a 45 sst ish. ![]() The cost is nearly the same. I found a place that make bullets ( cup and core) that are $.16 each 75 gr. 55 gr are $.12 each for 1,000 from 250 t0 30,000 the more you order the cheaper that are. If I can get them to shoot well I'm thinking a 1,000 should do for a 2 years of P dogging. ![]() |

Even if you're gun and load, shoots very good group like near an inch at 600 yards your probably getting a 5 or 6 inch group. That's with out any out side elements. Could you. ?

MY two very long shots were :
243, 65 gr 551 yards groundhogs/woodchuck. 222, 50 gr 662 yards parrie dog. NOW, it must be said that these kills were NOT one shot. had to walk it in 3 shots on p'dog 2 shots on woodchuck. Just because I sight in at 500 yards doesn't mean I can hit it. Note, my long kills were on varmints that don't run at first shot. BUT, coyotes seem to take off not waiting to hear a second shot. might be different with a can?

I find if we have not shot at a coyote 450/500 yards the report does not bother them a lot. I have shot coyotes at near 500 but I miss more than I hit, I'll take that back, I miss more than I KILL. Will I take a very iffy shot at a coyote? Yes, expect to kill it? No but even a blind monkey finds a banana sometimes...

Most of my rifles have a paper drop chart on the stock or on the cartridge box. doesn't mean that I routinely shoot those distances.
On deer sized critters, 250-350 yds is my "long range". did kill an antelope with one shot at 312 yds with the 6.5-08.

Even though everyone is claiming the 22 creed is a "Good" deer gun, I never intend it to shoot deer, Wolf maybe...
I use an 80 gr ttsx out of my 6mm for deer, that's my go too load for deer but its going 3600 + fps. in my 243 I use an 85 Barnes, I never had a deer take more then 2 steps form either. The to date farthest distance on the 6 is an antelope at 500 and the 254 is close behind with a HUGR mule deer at 475. I CAN shoot 80gr in the creed but not a copper 80 and not at that speed. I'll work out a cheat sheet at some point and Proof them. It's not a dial up scope but it has hash marks. ![]() Edited by d4570 - 04 December 2025 at 09:38 |

It's still a work in progress.
It's hard to get out at night and find the right place to call. We are just heading out on a 3 day calling hunt way up north and east MT. We will camp some place where we can work on our technique.

Ok I have on hand 75Gr soft point and 75 gr Hollow point Bullets I'm working with. The HP are boat tail, both are seconds and midway doesn't say the brand. I have been trying different powders and charges. I ordered some custom 75 gr ELD-M I'm using for a "benchmark". In my 20" Ruger American gen two I get 3325 fps and a .50 group. So far I get a 4.9 group and 3360 speed with Big game, on the Hollow points and 3440 and .46 group with h4350, with the soft point. So I'm right there. I have yet to test Mag Pro, we got GOOD results testing with 77 gr bullets.
If you can imagine I'm hopping for a bit better. The 77 gr got 3100 fps and .35 groups, So Maybe it will do the same with the 75's. So far I have 60 some shells in to the testing, probable another 20, then sight in at 1.5" high at 100. I think that will keep me on fur out to 300 yards no adjusting.

Not sure I understand "So far I get a 4.9 group".
Is that 4.9 inches? at what distance?
