with the silly happenings in this country, I am considering a shotgun as a last resort.
I'm thinking ranges of 40 yards or less from a cylinder bore. Thought steel #4?????????????????? not thinking of any indoor shoots.

Bear never use steel anything if you can use ANYTHING else.
Steel is the worse shot you can use for anything. Any lead over the size of #5 will put down an intruder. I'm not a fan of Buck and ball or even buck shot, So few in a shell. X4 buck would be my absolute biggest. BB would be out standing. If you go to heave shot #2 is about the same ballistics as BB and twice as many pellets. My 3" lead F ( 22 caliber) coyote loads have around 50 pellets. And will go all the way through a coyote covered with long winter hair at 70 yards. At 40 yards I would use an 1 1/4 with #2 to BB LEAD, load going someplace near 1400 fps and a modified choke. BUBA will go down to stay !!!!Of course a slug if you have time to aim would work well too.

I'm with D.
I wouldn't use steel shot. D has a lot more expierence with bigger shot than I do and I think his advice is solid. I never understood the popular use of #8 bird shot. To me it wouldn't have enough penetration. Especially if the bad guy is wearing a heavy leather jacket or something similar. Wing master

Also, I think D's coyote loads would be perfect.

The thing with using #8 or 7 1/2 shot is for indoors. Usually #8 doesn't penetrate two layers of drywall; so is is less likely to shoot thru a wall and hit your kids, ect. #4 will penetrate with some energy left.
As Op the load was to be outdoors, like someone on the lawn throwing a firebomb into house. I have some 3" #2 that I think will work.
