We have a thing: anytime we run across a savage for under $200, we get it for a doner. This one is a 300 Win Mag. We just re- barreled a 6.5 Creed to a 358 Win. Today, we finished the break-in, with 250 gr Speer, we got 2350, and all 1" or better, not bad. I plan to shoot 220 Hammers. The boy did a 3006 change to an 8mm x57. He got a box of FMJ to do the break-in; he got about the same for groups. The GD has a Ruger we did a 7mmx57 AI, and it's scary accurate. This one, we are thinking of maybe a 6.5 swede AI. What's the thought on that?

You already have a Swed. go with the 9.3x62 Mauser.

I've never had an AI but I'm a big fan of the Swede.
When I was working up a load I got velocities over 3000 fps. Just over that the bolt handle started getting pretty stiff. I ended up with a load that is just under 2900 and crazy accurate. I don't know what AI would add to that but it would be fun to find out.

The AI design works best with cases that have a lot of body taper. Like the 30-40 Krag, 300 H&H, 303 Brit.
The Swed does have some body taper so I'd expect some improvement. I'm sure you know that your present loads for the Swed are way over the book maximum, so you might not get a big improvement over your big loads. Since you like speed, that 110 already has a magnum bolt head, so maybe the 264 win might be an interesting choice??? only a new barrel needed. |

Been cleaning 5 rifles that I shot over last week. takes time as I like to get them totally clean.
Thinking, you like 6.5 rifles, why not a 6.5 Rem magnum. same bolt head as your 110. never got off the ground as Rem brought it out in an 18 inch barrel. with a 26" barrel it should sing!

I think published data for the Swede is safe in Krag rifles. Modern actions should be able to handle higher pressure.
I started out with a printout from Quick load. I started with loads that were on the low end of pressures that are safe in modern actions. I worked up from there watching CLOSELY for signs of pressure. The odd thing I saw was, I usually see flattend primers before anything else. On this rifle the primers looked good but the bolt getting stiff was the first pressure sign I saw. I backed down as soon as that happened. I ended up with a very accurate load that used about 3 grains less powder than I was seeing the stiff bolt. I feel completely safe shooting these loads but the part that bothers me a little is that there's no data for the powder I'm using. I emailed Alliant powder and Sierra bullets asking them to test the Swede with this powder and they both seemed to have more common cartridges to work on. |

I missed the part about D's gun having a magnum bolt face.
I think if it was me, Like Bear said I would look at the .264 Win Mag.

Well why not. That's a good Idea. We are looking into that. Does anyone know if you can ream out a chamber by hand? Is a lathe required? We have two needmore barrels that are just sitting an the bench. We can rent a finish reamer for $20. Head space gauges for about the same. $60-$80 bucks vs $500 for a new one. |

I think you can. with caustion.
helps if the pilot on the reamer is long. most of the "off" reaming starts at the first cut, and that will be reamer cleaned at the end of the cut. obviously use enough cutting oil, and take your time. I didn't think rechambering by a Smith was $500, new barrel maybe? just my wild a$$ thoughts.
