I felt I was messing up Wings 6mm arc thread so Here I am.
I went out and shot my recent purchase, savage axis 6.5 needmore. I got a box of Hornady superformance 129 sst factory ammo, and the boy loaded some hand load test loads. Some is 158 gr something bullets and varget I think, and some 129 sst with superformance powder. The factory bullets shot a 3/4" to 1 inch and got the box speed listed at 2950ish.The 158s jumped up to overpressure signs on the lowest load and hit 2500 fps, we did not shoot the rest of the test shells. The top handload with the ssts hit 2900 fps and shot a 3/4 group. I want to check the torque on the action screws and give the barrel a good cleaning and try some Barnes 129s and see how they work. I'm not planning on doing a lot of work on it, Next year I'm planning on the barrel change. Here is the plan for the 358 Win. ![]() ![]() We will see how it plays out, I may end up with a 200+ sst or something? ![]() Edited by d4570 - 22 October 2025 at 14:53 |

That should hit like a hammer. Pun intended. That's pretty good groups to take the barrel off but I get it. I'm sure the .358 will be just as accurate.

I have never done a barrel replacement on a Savage but it looks pretty straight forward.
I think I've read that Shaw makes finished barrels but is there anyone else that makes them?

Well as hoped. We broke the barrel in with 250 gr spear soft tips, and Varget. The actually shot fairly good. 2300 fps and near 1 inch groups, and a LOT of recoil.20 shots, shoot one clean for 10. Then 6 with cleaning every other one, then 4 to confirm hitting the target near center. We then tested 3 different Hammers 200, 215, and 223, and 4 different powders. A total of 45 bullets. Varget did not make the speed I wanted, I don't remember two of the powders and Tac. One load with the 215 HHT and Tac had the best promise. Ordered some 215 HHT hammer.
![]() I tried the one that looked good the first test and went up used up 12 more $2.50 bullets. The last two loads had a heavy bolt lift and a 1.75" groups. one just above the best from the first test, 48 gr Tac. gave me an average speed of 2515 and an inch group. That's what we are going to test on a deer. The bolt lift is very slightly hard, almost not noticeable. Wish me luck

OUCH! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Way too much recoil for my tired old body. Did you use a shooting vise? On the good side---it's a shooter.

No lead sled for me. Yes it should be a good deer getter, at least under 300 yards.

I'm sure you have enough energy to kill a deer. LOL. I'm impressed with some of the guns you have built. This one is no different.
I bet the recoil will get your attention.

Fortunately recoil doesn't bother me to much. After 40 shots it can be very annoying for sure. My 12 gauge and my 45/70 are at the top of my list for being annoying...
