.25 Creedmoor might be really interesting.
I wonder if it would do anything the .257 Roberts can't do? I'd have to look back in my notebook but I load the Roberts 117 grain Sierra Gameking to 2800 fps. The 6.5 Creedmoor is running around 2700 with a 140 grain bullet. How fast would it be with a 117 grain .257 bullet? It would be interesting to put it through Quickload and see what it said.

The case capacity of a .257 Roberts cartridge is approximately 42 grains of water; it is essentially a 7x57mm Mauser case necked down to accept a .257 diameter bullet, making it a "quarter-bore" cartridge with a relatively moderate case capacity compared to other hunting rounds. http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24"> The case capacity of a 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge is 52.5 grains of water (approximately 3.40 cubic centimeters). That is a lot of extra case capacity, powder. Note the 25-06 has 62 gr capacity. |

That is very interesting.
I've done a little reading and it seems that a few people beat us to this idea. From what I've read the people that have done it really like it.

I would be hard pressed to find one more perfect than a 308. Although the 280 has always worked very well also. I don't have a 30-06 or 270 anymore, nothing against them and probably will have them again

I thought about the .308 before I said 30-06. I can see why you said .308. It will do anything I need a rifle for. And it has the same amount of bullet choices.

First new rifle I got was a Rem 700 in 308, back in 1962. Was taking it as my night leopard rifle, and the barrel finally got shot out. It went from sub MOA to a 4" group withing a few boxes.
308 does it all. You can load it down to 30-30 levels; my kid shot his first deer with that rifle loaded with light 125 gr.

Sure he is a great shot. And he has the patience to wait for two to line up... sort of a Quigley shot!
Actually, that guy got a lot of gopher everyday. How are you doing IBD? any great adventures??

I remember that too. He shot a lot of PD's that day.
I do have a question though. Do gophers carry diseases like prairie dogs? I'm sure he knew what he was doing but I would have been concerned about getting the plague.

If I remember correctly, Jack O'Connor shot 6 Griz w/the '06.
Tis the upper limit of recoil of what most shooters can tolerate. The .308 and '06 cases, are about the same (I said about). Anything smaller than .30 is light on Griz....or so I hear. .27 caliber works good on Javelina to Elk....the only problem is that it bruises them to much when they fall to the ground after getting lifted off their feet by the bullet. |

Right on Stinky,
I'd say the 270 is light on Elk, the minimum. My giz rifles are 338 and 416 RM. I like 'more gun" for things that will hurt me. Shooting and hunting in the 1960-90 era, I'd say shooters then could easily handle the '06. (maybe conditioned with an M! rifle) But today. as you say Stinky, Most think a standard rifle cartridge is 223, and a 6.5 Creedmore is as much recoil that the average hunter can "handle'. (maybe AR conditioned.)

I always thought the .270 was the minimum for elk until the year my dad had shoulder surgery and was worried about shooting his 30-06 or .270. He borrowed my daughters .257 Roberts. He shot an average sized cow with it and it kinda humped it's back up, took a few steps and went down. After that everyone in the family wanted to use that gun and I saw it drop several more elk in similar fashion. I've shot 2 elk with a 6.5 and my grandaughter shot an elk with a 6.5 Creedmoor.
They were all good shots and clean kills.
