OK more on the GDs 7mmx57ai.
It still flat-out amazes me, but I HATE the Ruger Mag—nothing but frustrations. The 57 needs a long action, it's a bit longer than a 308 which is 2.8" and shorter than a '06 at 3.34" it comes in at right  3".
No one sells after-market rotary mags for the Ruger and there's is crap. I bought 5 different ones hoping one would work, but no such luck. I have filed, sanded, and scraped with little success. I can get them to work "Most" the time but not ALL the time. I think part of the problem is the mag is just too long. I'll get them to feed one after another when I just work the bolt and not firing. When you shoot the recoil moves the remainder closer to the front of the mag. Sometimes the next one will work but seldom any after that. I have tried loading only 3 in the mag, and the something I have loaded only 2 same.
So.
I used JB steel weld and packed it into the front of the mag. On the first try, I added too much, of course, it had to be set up to try it. Being a rotary mag it all has to be done through the back of the mag. Now with it too short I Had to mill it out. I used a 3/8 spade drill bit with the point ground off and used my drill press as the milling machine. I worked darn good, with the press I could make it nice and flat. The Pics are hard to see but you can see how much I filled in compared to the untouched one. I glued and snapped it on the back plate. WOW, what a difference they all go in as I work the bolt, I went out and shot, two mags of 4 shots without a fumble I did 8 shots in all, and everyone fed perfectly...ClapClapClap

Good job.

You are correct about the 7x57 being to long for "short actions" designed for 308.
The 7x57 mauser is a 'treener, to short for a std long action ('06) and to long for the SA (308).  Same thing with the 257 Roberts.  They need to be on a long action.

Regarding your mag, nice fix.  I think that Ruger has changed it to a double staggered mag???
