Just got back from a perch trip.  4 grandkids, 9, 11, 11(twins),13.

Got lucky 2 decent days to boat fish, in mid April.

110 caught mostly medium size, enough for two dinners.

Lots of filleting...but my kid did that...I just kept the vodka in his glass.   Grandkids cleaned some of them.

Great times and great memories.

Perch are really good eatin'. The only problem is they are like fileting a sunflower seed.

It's good to hear you got to spend some time with kids in the outdoors. The best combination I can think of.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

Several years ago I was up in northern Saskatchewan with my dad fishing for walleye and Northern Pike and we got into a bunch of perch. We must have caught 30 of them at least. The guide would filet the fish we brought in but this time he showed us how to do the first one then said "You're on your own". We released the ones we caught after that. They were good eatin' but kinda like eating crawdads, Theirs not much meat for the work it takes to get to it.

Blue gills around here are about 3 inches long. I've never tried fileting one. I've never caught a rock bass but I'll keep that in mind if I ever do.
