i don't want to get in a big discussion on whether or not they are necessary or beneficial, i just want to know if:

1) they exist, and

2) if so, who makes them?

I dont think anyone makes them, but i am not sure. I guess having the boattail might improve tradjectory, but i am not sure. I will go look it up right now.

Howdy TAS  >>  I've never heard of such a thing, but that surely doesn't mean they aren't out there.  If they aren't out there, I'd assume it's for the exact reasons you already mentioned above.  Report in if you trip across some.  I'll give'em a whirl in the .307, as well    .  Good luck in the search.  >>  klallen

some guy on the marlin board said that federal put them in their factory loads. if this is true, it's the first i've heard of it. if they did, they must have gotten them from somewhere...

if i find them, i'll let you know where...

Federal doesn't make a loaded cartridge using a BT in any caliber with a round or flat nose!

I don't believe these would make sense in a .30, or any caliber, come to think of it. What is your intended use?

Tas,

Nosler makes a 120 gr 7mm flat tip boat tail, but I don't know of any other 30 cal.  Sorry.

waksupi -

one of the main reasons that i wanted them was because i find it easier to seat bullets straighter with boattails. i use a lee loader, and when i am seating bullets, i find that the boattails just fro right in, allowing me to seat the bullet in a way that ensures a straight result.

i also must admit that i was interested in the boattail's ability to reduce wind drag. even with a flat point, every advantage helps. my idea on this (and i could easily be wrong) is that it is all relative. if a boat tail helps a .30-cal spitzer under certain conditions, then it is also going to help a flat-nose under similar conditions, regardless of the nose design. it might not help as much or for the same duration in flight, but it must help. any advantage that i can get is worth it, in my opinion.

perhaps the last reason i seek them is because i can think of no reason NOT to have them!

Tasunk;

While there may be no reason NOT to have them, there is a reason for the handloader to be careful with them.  As an example:  Speer #13 lists separate loads for boatail & flat base bullets in the .243 dia.  I don't see the distinction in the .300 Winchester Magnum data thoughn.  What this tells me is that it is possible that the BT base can produce higher pressures under some conditions.

Whether or not it will do that in your gun is an unknown.  Therefore, as always, start with a minimum load & carefully work up if you find some of these bullets.  I suspect that the data base on them will be extremely limited.

The terms flat nose or round nose and boat tail bases has always seemed like a counterdiction in bullet characteristics.  That said, I can't imagine why I wouldn't give them a try in the .307 if they're out there.  Wouldn't be a bad controlled test to run.  Flat and boattail bases side by side and see if there are any benefits or disadvantages at .307 ranges.  >>  klallen

You might be interested in some comments from the Hawk Bullets website:

"We do not make any boattail bullets, as they have several disadvantages and no beneficial effect until velocity drops below 1100 F.P.S. (speed of sound)."

Nosler does make a boat tail of sorts. If you look at a true boat tail you'll see that Nosler doesn't make a boat tail bullet at all, unless its in their match grade bullets. The bevel base bullets they do make do in fact make it very easy to seat when reloading.

Tas,

You may want to try champerin with a different tool.  Some tools use a steeper slope (cut further in) and make loading flat based bullets easier.  The reason why there ain't no short stocky flat, or round nose bullets with boattails is cause mostly they don't perform as well as flat based bullet.  This is true for most short and stubbies according to some pretty impressive bench shooters.  Of course they only use shorter bullets fer shorter range (under 200).

Go get you a centerpunch from the hardware store. Use that
to slightly flare the case mouth, and you will have no problems
seating flat based bullets. Old timers used to flare case mouthes for
cast bullets using a spitzer bullet a couple of calibers up (Say a .35 in a .30)
as a flaring tool. I still use the centerpunch for cast bullet
calibers I'm to lazy to make an insert for a Lyman M die for.

I called a techy I know at Nosler today, about the boat tail bullets they make, With tongue in cheek, I was told they consider all the bullets they make with a beveled base a boat tail, although the match bullets do have a more pronounced boat tail shape. So thats that

Without trying to push a topic, because of the normal lever action used on the 30-30, the loads and design of the bullet are limited.

would like to see more done with this round. The 30-30 is a fun rifle to shoot, and I am told by my friends back east who hunt in close woods that it is an effective hunting rifle.

I think more could be done to expand the round.

Bojon, there really isnt anything that you can do to the .30-30 to expand it. A very hot handload maximum velocity is right around 2450 FPS. It is just too old to be improved upon, no matter what new stuff you through at it. As far as i know, you wont improve anything by using modern high-tech bullets in it because the velocities are just too low. It is a very good deer killer in the east, and it would do fine out west as long as you keep the range under 150 yards and make sure you have a good aim.

Not quite true - you could always rebore it to ackley improved - the 30-30 is one of those cartridges that really benefits from the ackley mods. You can get the better part of 2700 fairly easily by all accounts. That flattens it out quite a bit.
