 Topic: What’s So Great About Stainless???

My experiences with stainless finishes on rifles isn’t good. The only one I ever bought caused me to loose a very nice 6x6 Elk. The finish on that rifle, a Ruger M77 in .270 Win., flashed like a mirror and the synthetic stock was anything but quiet. Every time you bumped it against something it would sound like a drum. Outside of being, weather proof(?????), what use are they? Wouldn’t they scare half the game in Africa flashing around seeing that the African game has such great eyes? What I want is the opinion of those that have been there or use one for hunting.

stainless is so great because:
-it can handle more abusive weather w/ less maintenance than blued.
-it has proven itself to be more accurate.
all my rifles are blued. i prefer the traditional look of blued rifles.
as far as the mirror effect...a friend and i were on a dog town one summer day. we went for a walk to see what was 'over there', and left our rifles behind. at around 500 yards out, i couldn't see my wood/blue rifle, but could easily spot his stainless synthetic ruger.
when/if i go stainless, the rifle will be bead blasted and teflon coated a dark color to eliminate that problem.
one glaring fault of stainless is that it handles extreme cold very poorly. a thin barrel pushing a high-intensity cartridge may split in extreme cold - at least before a blued one will.
as far as the syn stock goes... i really like wood and wood laminate. if i had a ruger boat paddle stock, i'd sell it and buy a mcmillan. if i had any other stock, i would put a foam spray sound deadener in the stock... most factory syn stocks are pure garbage and should be replaced anyway...

Hey Lawdog, was that Ruger stocked with the new synthetic or the old one. The new one is hollow and i have heard you can fix the sound problem with some spray insallation(?). The butt pad on the butt of the rifle can come off and you spray some in there and shut it tight. THat should fix your sound problem. Or you could buy an old style synthetic and it is more expensive than the first idea, but it works.

I bought that Ruger in 1992 and sold it three months later. The rifle shot just fine with groups running around 1 inch or less. Just didn’t want some pilot calling in a distress signal on my location. I only have one rifle now that has a stainless barrel on it and that is my new Win. M70 Coyote in .223 WSSM. I’m going to see about bluing the barrel but have heard horror stories about bluing stainless barrels. I’m going to find out though because the last trip to the range I forgot the sun shield for my scope and the glare was so bad it was almost impossible to shoot due to the glare on the front lens of the scope. I’m also going to dump that stock and put some REAL wood on it. Lawdog

Lawdog and all;
I have a couple of stainless long guns. The first I got was a Ruger 77/22 with the boat oar stock. Still have it, & have no complaints about it. I use it mostly as a gopher gun. It wears a Simmons 4X12 A/O Whitetail Classic. Took more than a little while for the trigger to wear in, but it's been a good tough gun for a long time.
My other is a Winchester new model 70 stainless classic with BOSS/CR. In .30-06, left hand bolt in a McMillan stock. The finish is stainless matte, no glare that I've noticed. It's accurate, dependable and tough. What more could you want? Since I don't sleep with my guns, I'm not obsessive about how they look. Snrk!

Hay lawdog ! How does that Coyote shoot ?Ideen wonderin how those wssm cartridges would shoot in a rifle with a heavy barrel.I think robar will put a finish on it for ya ! But It aint cheap! By the way I have only had one stainless rifle and I only used it for one season(shot a forked horn muly with it) I may go for another one day but it,l have to be somthing special. Have you considerd bead blasting the barrel ?

So far the .223 WSSM Coyote shoots great(1" or under) nothing special yet but I'm still working on loads. This morning I bloodied the Coyote by nailing a Coyote that had his eye on one of my grandkids goats in our pasture. Range was 293 yards, according to the range finder, and that big dog dropped where he was at. I have been told of a bluing process that will blue stainless but it takes many applications before it looks like something. If anyone knows about this please let me know. Lawdog

I took a 300 Weatherby MarkV UltraLightweight to Alaska, where it seem to rain about every three hours. This rifle has a stainless barrel and synthetic stock. The barrel is not especially shiny, and I suspect glares less than a traditional polished blued Weatherby barrel. The barrel is also fluted with the flutes being black. I don't get any glare looking through the scope. The stock is a dull dark gray and "solid," making no particular sound I can notice. I was satisfied with the experience and will hunt again with this rifle this Fall.
