If y'all haven't seen it yet the new issue of Guns magazine (I think that's the one) has an article about a Howa 1500 showing the effects of 107,000 psi (is that the right terminology?).  I guess the guy used the wrong powder.  Anyway the barrel went downrange and the receiver is split open like a banana.  Lots of brass deposited on the remains.  Pretty interesting photos.

That GAWA don't have the 19 locking lugs that the real Weatherby has. So it blew with half the pressure.

I wonder how they figguired out how much pressure blew it up?

Here's a good link on CUP, and how they don't directly relate to PSI

http://www.reloadingpro.com/Measuring%20Pressure.htm

Heck go to this one and see how the web brass starts flowin at 70k

http://www.reloadingpro.com/Inspecting%20the%20Brass.htm

At 75 to 85k you'll be lucky to get the bolt open cause the brass will fuse to just about everythin.  Least that's what the remington smith said, his note went like this - "you have obviously greatly exceeded the maximum load for this cartridge.  Cut your grains down and begin where the manuals reccomend.  We had to remove the barrel, and then ream and polish the chamber to remove the brass.  IF WE RECEIVE THIS RIFLE IN THIS CONDITION AGAIN, IT WILL NOT BE SENT BACK.

hmmmm.... Think he was serious?  I do - Luckily fer my friend who was seein how fast he could get that 17Rem to go didn't get too far above 4k before she seized.  Think he was over or near 4200 fps, YIKESSS!

Hey Spot:

I only skimmed the article, but the writer knew the powder and powder charge and I guess calculated the pressure from that.  The cartridge (I think) was a 6.5-'06 wildcat or something like that.

Don't know bout pressure lest I'm lookin at a primer, or firin a round I'm really familiar with.  Even then I only know when things is getting dangerous...  I like stayin with powders that are compressed at max load.  This way if ya were to screw up the powder wouldn't fit in the case.  However, I don't like using compressed where you know your doing more than doin a slight pack.  If you start crackin them peices of powder you change the burn rate, and that can be really bad.  Worse then all that is gettin ANY barrel obstruction, but you never know.

I think NH was refering to how slow the store is at getting the new stuff?

I finally saw and read the article last night. Shooter was fire forming cases. He meant to load 46.0 grains of H-414. He loaded 46.0 grains of H-4227. Operator error!
