It is pretty hard to outdue those Canadians when it comes to Pac boots. Sorels and Kamik lead the way. I used Kamiks last year and Sorels the year before. Hey Spot, dont forget your wool clothes. Greatest hunting clothing ever defised.

I've had Sorel's before when hunting in NY, and PA.  Just wanted to know if anything better had come out.  Heck I got through with my Rockies (600 gr thinsilate) last time I was up in NY (last year).

I haven't ever worn wool clothes, probably should try some.  Any brand come to mind, or you got old military clothing?

Codet, Filson, and some Vermont one that has Beaver in the name. I have a Codet outfit, but this year i will need a new vest and pants . $$$ . I will probably just get a new Codet vest and i think i am going to switch over to bibs rather than pants. The suspenders and belt on the pants are usually annoying. O yeah, cant forget Woolrich. If you are a pro-camo guy then you can go with Woolrich's Camwoolflauge. Wool isnt too expensive and it is a hell of a lot better than jeans and a snowboarding/skiing jacket. Also remember that if you do go with the wool option, always make sure you have a non-wool material under it or else you will be soo itchy you will want to shoot yourself. I usually wear: a tee shirt under a long underwear shirt, then another insulated shirt, then a flannel shirt, and then a wool vest, and then a wool coat. On the bottom I wear long underwear and wool pants. On my feet i have wool hybrid socks so they dont itch. If it is real cold outside wear two pair. Then i have my Kamik boots. I wear wool gloves and a wool hat with ear flaps. DONT FORGET THE EAR FLAPS WHATEVER YOU DO!!!! Make sure you have a spare set of gloves in case they get too wet. Wool will still keep you warm even when it is wet, which is one hell of a hard feature to beat.

Trust me, when it comes to winter clothing, trust the guy from Canada or the "Kingdom of Cold" (quote of CB900F)

Ditto on the sorels with an extra pair of inside packs. I buy a supply of the chemical toe warmers to stick them in. Don't use the handwarmers , because they are formulated differently and won't  keep you as warm.

Heck, there ain't some new sexy high tech boot out there thet makes the other ones look bad.  Oh well, I was wondering if them new LaCross boots, or them wonder pac's that Cabelas is using are worth there salt.  Liners are real important, last time I got a pair I picked up one too small and it wasn't lettin my blood flow right.  Dang feet got cold, this time I'll get a pair thet fits.

Saddle your right on them foot warmers, they don't need as much oxegen as them handwarmers.

NH, As much as I love wool, (I will NEVER part with my Navy surp. wool watch caps)  I have been switching over to the micro fleeces. The stuff is way lighter, wicks away moisture, and dries alot faster. It also is just a fraction of the price of GOOD wool.

What prices do you pay for wool? Around here, its fairly cheap. The pants are cheaper than a pair of shorts for school! Then again, school clothes arent cheap

I like Sorrels.  I got a pair of Whites ridin' pacs, but they come up too high fer my taste.  Hard to get all my pants an' unnerwear inside.  I allays put a extra felt insole in my pacs.  Mos' the cold comes from the sole.  To tell the truth, I ain't high on huntin' deep snow.  Mor' an a couple inches, an' you got one hunt afor there's a crust an' you might as well be wearin' bells.

If it is freezing rain going on top of the snow than you are kind of alright noise wise. I can stay fairly quite, its just my dad . The other problem is traction.

I have to agree with Jeff . . . wool has to be the way to go.  I used to hate wool.  Didn't like the feel on my legs - still don't.  Then I had to work, play, and travel under conditions that changed my mind.  For years, my "hunting costume" in the South, in the winter, was a chamois cloth shirt, a very heavy wool CPO shirt for a jacket, heavy wool socks, and Raichle hiking boots which were nearly indestructible.  And in that climate, wool served me well . . . cold and wet . . . the wool DOES keep you somewhat warm when it is wet.  Down, and some synthetics, become soggy useless weight when they get wet.

Most of my winter clothing for Colorado relate to my cross country skiing.  So I have a lot of light synthetic garments, but a wool sweater over the top is a lot lighter and warmer when traveling on skis.  Although my ski boots are insulated with Thinsulate [one of the best insulators], I still wear wool socks.  They cushion and are warm.  However, I do wear thin polyester socks next to my feet.  They wick the moisture away from my feet - they are made for that purpose.

Trouble with Colorado [or an advantage] is the altitude.  You can be over-heated one moment [in the sun] and freezing your patootie [butt] if the sun goes away.  I found myself in a survival situation, near fatal, several years ago when I skied quite aways from the lodge.  I was at Devil's Thumb Ranch, at over 9,000 feet.  Sunny . . . beautiful . . . hardly a cloud in the sky then it got windy and started snowing!  Within minutes I couldn't see the trail.  I was wearing light polyester ski pants, a wool sweater, and wool socks.  I had a wool stocking cap stuffed in my sweater.  I put it on.  For a VERY long time I fought my way through the snow . . . letting memory be my guide as I skied around snow and ice covered streams . . . trying to find the trail.  I knew I couldn't stop . . . movement was heat . . . and brought me closer to safety.   When I finally made it to the lodge . . . I looked like a snowman.  I was covered from head-to-foot.  Guy at the ski shop said: "It's rough out there!"  That was an understatement!  I went to my room - took a hot shower - and slept for 13 hours!  For one time in my life I was totally exhausted.  But, I think the wool stocking cap, the wool sweater, and the wool socks were positive things . . . may have helped save my life.  Synthetics might have become soaked and useless.  However, my gloves are lined with Gortex and insulated with Thinsulate.  They are practically "bullet-proof," in a weather-protective sense.  I have to take them off to shoot a rifle . . . I use wool liner gloves for that purpose.

If you come to Colorado, or New Mexico, in fact the whole area . . . be prepared.  It has its interesting weather foibles.  Be prepared.  DON"T overdress . . . dress in layers . . . but have something in case it gets cold.  Anyone on BSB who lives in the Rockies know what I am talking about.  By the way, I wear a small hip pack which has a zippered pocket big enough to stuff in a few survival supplies and which has two water bottle pockets.  Handy, light, could be a life-saver . . . even holds a box of .30-06 ammo!

Sorry about the length of the post . . . had to tell my story!

I got me a pair of them Whites cowboy style pacs that I think Mule was referring to.  I wore them hunting once and felt like I was dragging a ball and chain.  Way too big and heavy for any purpose.  I borrow my dad's Whites mountain pacs for hunting now... a lot smaller and easier to get around in.  I like Whites a lot better than Sorrels, but the most important thing is to stay away from heavy and bulky pacs if you plan on doing much hiking.

I can't get a pair of Whites to fit me. I had to do the snow shoe thing a few years, but decided if the mule couldn't plow through it, neither could the elk. If it's +15 inches, you don't have to worry about the noise unless it's crusted. Ain't nothing like riding the timber in a light snow fall and  getting off to shoot the elk when you catch them in thier beds.

Best combination I have found for snow that is not too deep (Less than 6 inches) is a pair of vasque hiking boots and a set of fleece gaiters. ( They don't make them in wool), wool socks , with poly under them and chemical toe warmers.

The very best combination is to stay in the tent with some liquid warmer, a nice fire in then stove and tell lies. Elk don't move around much in a storm. But you best be out there in the first hour that it stops.

Hey,

They got some new fancy pac's in the Cabela's catalog, I'm going to check them out.  Seems like they offer a much better cold barrier on the bottom of yer feet, no to mention a pocket fer them foot warmers.  Some of them claim good to -135!  I know thet really means it' good to around -40, -60 at best.
