went to the gun store to try and negotiate a deal on a win 70 crpf 300 wsm. negotiations went very well and very fast. couldn't get my money out fast enough! then, got put on delay by nics...got approved just before the close of business, so i managed to bring the rifle home.

my initial impressions are that the rifle looks about the way you'd expect a mass-produced factory rifle to look. looks fine - not beautiful, gorgeous, ugly, or whatever other adjective. the rifle does seem fairly light, though, and balances well. it seems to come up naturally feel pretty good.

the trigger is heavy, but at least there is very little creep in it. bit much overtravel, but i'm sure that can be cured later.

anyway, i didn't have any winchester bases (all my stuff says 'remington' on it), so i picked up a set of leupold bases in silver. i thought i had rings here (low, matte finish), but turns out i didn't...i've had a leupold compact sitting around forever, so i didn't buy a scope.

anyway, a few minutes of work netted me this:

the scope is a leupold 3-9x33 compact. it sits in leupold gloss finish rings and leupold silver bases. the sling swivels and studs are uncle mike's, and the sling is butler creek.

not at all happy w/ the rings. the gloss finish really looks terrible when everything else is matte... will rectify that situation in the very near future! also, the bases... leupold messed up... one of the screws is entirely too long and binds the bolt if installed - i had to resort to my box-o'-optics-stuff to get this to work.

here's a close-up of the goofy rings:

not sure how i'll get used to the 3-position safety... i really dislike it. we'll see.

part of the deal i got included factory (win silver box 180 grain) ammo. if i get a chance, i'll check that stuff out and see if i can get a chrony reading or two. i am anxious to 1) check out in depth for myself a winchester rifle, 2) the 300 wsm and 3) the accuracy this package is capable of. i'll report on it all once i get some opinions firmed up.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Morning DAKOTASIN  >>  Glad the deal went well for ya.  You're certainly gonna have to tell all with this creature.  From the factory stuff on through your reloading process.

You talked about the look of the rifle not really being either extreme, beautiful or ugly.  Personally, I'd sport that little rifle up with a nice laminated stock from Boyds.  I just got rid of the last cheapo plastic stalk in my safe with a finished, laminated Ross thumb hole for the Savage .223 and it certainly does wonders for the look of the rifle.  I certainly don't know how you like the stalk and if you like, stick with it, but if you'd like a change, Boyds would probably be a nice affordable way for ya to do it.

Anyway, congrats on the gun.  Looking forward to your results.  >>  klallen

sounds like a nice rifle to me! Personaly I,m not real big on the black shadow stock but I would go for an Hs precision but the boyds are alot cheaper and look real nice. The trigger is no problem for any decent smith. I cary my model 70s with the safty in the middle posisition, (be aware that if the bolt handle is not all the way down you can't get it off safty) it takes a little getting used to but i like the 3 posisition safty I can cycle my hand loads through the rifle with the saftey on. I bet with hand loads after a trigger job you will shoot moa or better. And, you have a real good scope. On the scre problem with your mounts one of the positions ,I can't remember witch one has a deeper hole in the mounting base, that is why one screw is longer, than the rest. You may be only a couple threads deep in the reciever, if you put the short screw in the long hole. Made the same mistake my self ! Looking forward to a range report. !

i tried the offending screw in all 4 holes... it wouldn't go down far enough in the front 2, and it would bind the bolt regardless of which rear hole it went into. maybe i got a mistake? at any rate, i found a screw in my 'box-o'-optics' that was shorter than the offending screw, but longer than the next longest. whatever - it is in.

if the wind stays down, i'll have an initial range report posted this evening... got the rifle cleaned up this morning, so she's ready to rock. got the range mowed this afternoon, so it is ready...

as far as the trigger and stock go, i always shoot factory new guns in their factory trim first. i guess i do it mostly for my own amusement to see what the factories palm off as 'rifles'. i also do it because of all the 'out-of-the-box' claims i see/hear. to date, i have yet to shoot a factory new rifle that hits some of these 'out-of-the-box' claims. oh, they do it eventually - like after bedding, trigger work, etc... but, by then, they are no longer 'out-of-the-box'. clean 'em up, shoot 'em, evaluate, adjust, and start over is the process i follow.
