6mm range results

Got up early & went to the range.  NO WIND!!  Didn't even drink a cup of coffee, I was serial 'bout this.  I had 7 loads to test.  The first was part of the 30 loaded rounds that came with the rifle.  Yeah, this guy was so disgusted that he sold me the gun & it came with 20 brass & 30 loaded rounds.

Load #1.  Sierra 75 gr HP over 41 gr of IMR 4320, R-P cases, CCI 200 primers, OAL 2.820.  All loads are R-P cases & CCI 200 primers, 5 shot groups, will not mention further.  Avg vel 3211 SD 42, group 1.649. 

Load #2.  75 gr Hornady V-max moly (same bullet all rest of loads) 46 gr N160, OAL 2.860.  Avg vel 3038, SD 10, group 2.381

Load #3.  46 gr N160, OAL 2.840.  Avg vel 3027, SD 17, group 1.885 

Load #4.  38 gr IMR 4064, OAL 2.860.  Avg vel 2902, SD 13, group 1.414

Load #5.  38 gr IMR 4064, OAL 2.855.  Avg vel 2925, SD 23, group 1.339

Load #6.  46 gr IMR 4350, OAL 2.860.  Avg vel 3102, SD 47, group 1.462

Load #7.  46 gr IMR 4350, OAL 2.825.  Avg vel 3059, SD 22, group .491

I'm not going to say that group size measuring proceedures were up to Olympic standards.  They were all measured by the same process though.  No special brass prep.  All shots fed from the magazine.   Obviously, more work needs to be done to produce a statistically viable data base.  But, there is certainly cause for encouragement.  Da little sucker can shoot!  Whoopee!

You haven't been following this little saga have you?  When I got it, the barrel had been bandsawed off & never recrowned.  Free-floated, nope - didn't work, well then acra-glass the hell outta it!!  Took a 2lb dead-blow hammer to get it outta the stock.  No, didn't pull any wood with getting the action out.  But had to detail strip & clean like you would not believe in order to get all the release agent out of it.  It was even in the firing pin channel in the bolt!  But I got it cheap.

I rebedded it, had an 11 degree target crown put on the muzzle & opened up the barrel channel again.  This was the first real test firing.

Evening CB  >>  After getting it back to specs, what do ya figure the the final length of barrel is you're working with?  My .243 loves IMR4350 when used with the 80 gr. Ballistic Tip.  Seems to be a good powder for these cartridges and that weight bullet.  Good luck with your testing.  >>  klallen 

     Yo did not say what model of rifle you were shooting . I have never had an appropriate  rifle that did not shot well with IMR-4350 some times like in the 7mm08 velocity was not so good but accuracy was allways there.

ahh, yes, i remember you mentioning the saga of the butchered rifle. happy for ya that you could get it back into some semblance of shape. that it was cheap and shoots well due to your own work only makes it better...

Fella's;

Noticed an odd pattern on the fired brass from the 6mm.  Wrapped around the neck was a crenellation type pattern in carbon.  l_l-l_l-  Almost as though the leade were slightly oval & the neck was only sealing full length on the sides, or top & bottom. 

I also noticed the the R-P cases have real neck thickness probs.  The new Winchester brass is much better for concentric wall thickness in the neck.  Gad, with some of the fired Remingtons, it was glaringly obvious with the naked eye - and my eyesight isn't so good anymore.

Makes me start to wonder if the sub .5 group was just having the tongue held just right or what.  Actually, you don't see almost an average 1 inch reduction in group size without something being right, but It can prey upon the mind.

Oh, & tj30-06, it's a Remington 788 left hand bolt, Weaver V9 combo.
