First off, some Montanans do know what a wolf looks like, VS a dog.
My boy sent me a text this morning. He and his crew where heading in to the Belts to burn some slash piles for training of the seasonal rookies. On the way, off the interstate he instructs the drive to " SLAM ON HIS BRAKES" three Fire trucks come to a stop on the shoulder and everyone's face was looking into the trees. DAMN! a Black wolf was looking back. 80 yards off the interstates right away. Very near to forest lands but, on a type 1 Block Management area still open to the first of the year, with only a sign in required. Now here is a thought, question. Do you think it is worth a look see later this week? Wolf season runs in to march. They could not get out and investigate if it was a loner passing through or if a Pack was in the area. I'm guessing there is still a lot of wounded and dead game laying around, the general season is closed and it got a LOT of hunting presser and road kill is abound too. MAYBE...

Wolves are not Varmints or fur bearers, there "Big Game"
That means 1/2 hour be for and 1/2 hour after sunup. We CAN use E calls.

Right! A big male wolf as you know can be 160 pounds+ My 6mm RM 80gr Barnes 3600 fps, would be the smallest I'd try, not fur friendly. The gun is dang heavy and long to pack when chasing a wolf. The rem700 is 4 pounds lighter and maybe the 200 gr Barnes at 3200 fps won't blast a hole the size of a basket ball in the off side, maybe. The Ruger 30/06 would be a good choice, it is even lighter, but the only load I have worked up is for varmints, a 110 v max at 3500 fps. ALL that said if we do it, I'll take the 8.

Do you have any Fur-friendly FMJ bullet loads?
Some military surplus 150 gr FMJ in the 'o6 would work well.

Before "Fur" I use the '06 or 6mm.
When the fur is good I try to keep it to the 22/250 or 12 gauge. |

I'd think the 22-250 with FMJ would be great. long distance and little bullet expansion for fur.

Heck yeah I'd go back.
I'm thinking I'd use the 8 over the 6. But that's just me. I'm not sure how far a wounded wolf shot with a 6mm would run but I think it would go right down with an 8mm hole in it.

6 mm would put it in heaven. 8mm will put little energy into a kill.

200 yards or more and the 8 will fully expand.
But there is still more energy at 200 as the 6 at the muzzle, just push on through I bet. I have had the 6 pass trough a mule deer at 450, both shoulders. ![]() The 6mm would be the better choice, right tool for the job, but I LIKE shooting the big 8. ![]() Edited by d4570 - 10 December 2022 at 17:34 |
