Topic: 6mm cleaning question Posted: 27 June 2003 at 02:25
Fella's;
A question for those of you with .243/6mm experience. Do you use the larger generic patches that are for .243 -.270 & fight with the damn things, or use the .22 patches & run about twice as many through the barrel?
I tried the larger ones & I don't want to do that anymore. But the .22 patches seem to just kinda slide through & I worry that they aren't getting into the grooves & cleaning properly.
I just can't see myself sitting down to trim 1/4" off two sides of a bag of a 1000 patches. Although I can see my children doing it, they now are old enough to call DPASS & I think I'd go down for child abuse on that one.
What's a mother to do?

hey cb: when you clean your rifle it a relaxing thing to do. cut the patches as you need them. tell everyone to stay away while you are doing this. dont need any distractions.

BAH WHY CANT I MAKE MY FONT SIZE LARGER!!!!!! But anywayz, when i was cleaning my muzzleloader i had to use 2 shotgun patches. I think it is probably better to go with something that fits. If it is too small, double them. If they are too big, it is easier and cheaper to just rip up paper towels and use those.
I buy ordinary cotton flannel by the yard at the discount store , get my wife to cut it into strips 1', 1-1/4" wide with one of those roller cutter thingys. Stuff 'em in a baggy, fish one end out and then just cut to length. .22 to .45, just make the length longer and double if necessary. Works real good, and it's CHEAP! Don't do .17's thou, use the thin commercial patches for that.

Hey CB >> Been a little while since I cleaned the .243 completely but I do believe that I took my 2 1/4" patches and cut corner to corner triangles. If I remember correctly, they worked real well with my .243 nylon brushes and .243 jag. Matter of fact, seems as though I use these triangles up through the .264 class.?.?.?.? I know I should have this data down pat but with using molied bullets, I just don't do thourough cleans as much. Good luck to ya. >> klallen

outers makes a patch that runs 243-284.
i like to take this bag w/ me on 'dog shoots for my 22's...very tight fit in the 22's and seems to clean them up quickly. fits perfect in the 6 mm's, and i think it is too light in the 7 mm's, but that is what it is labeled for.
for the record, i trim patches as i need them now... cheaper to buy huge bags of generic patches.
Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Hey edip, i figured out why my text was having problems. It is because, at least how i see it, maybe tex changed the font sizes. I found out the old three, is now size 5. It may just be my computer because a lot of text is different.
