Well, it has happened. After all the bear sightings close to home, I have found solid sign of a bear, or bears, here on our hunting lease. We put out a couple baits to see if we can't get one coming in regularly and maybe get a chance at one in the season. NY laws are stupid, you can bait and run with hounds, but cannot hunt over a bait or shoot one treed by hounds. Baits need to be picked up before the season opens. I'm hoping one will still be attracted to the bait site after the barrels are picked up. I set up cameras so hopefully we get a look at one!

I (we) don't want them around. Seems the predators are overrunning things here, thus why I am dusting off the traps and gonna hit it hard this fall. FIL and his crew have had several bears at their bait sites for several years now, maybe 10-12mi as the crow flies. Some of them are BIG! I have his pictures I'll try to post them.

Here are a few pictures. For perspective the bait bucket is half of a 55gal drum. The pictures are from 2 different sites probably 5mi from each other. I cropped the pictures to be able to post them, but they are all within the last 20-25 days. I am pretty sure these are 4 different bears. The big boys are monsters, I would guess 300lbs+. There have been no sow with cubs seen yet this year at these sites.

D, he has hundreds of pictures, I just picked couple. Not sure how many different bears, maybe 6 or 7 this year? He has had pictures of sow with twins and triplets. These pictures are on newly public land, it was until just a few yrs ago part of their large lease, 3500ac. So they have to register their bait sites, I do not cause mine are on private land, but you can't shoot bears over bait here...yet. Bait has to be picked up 10 days before the season opens, and no early bear season here. They are starting to show up all over the state and become a big problem in the burbs, so you know what will happen, hopefully, the state relaxes the hunting regs and lets us hunt them with hounds or over bait...we'll see.

That little guy in the last pic is just like the one hitting my burn barrel! That first one looks like the other juvenile that has been sneaking around here. Give em another five or so years and get a decent rug!

The under 400 bears are usually a problem, big ones are usually smart enough to keep a distance and have learned that a free meal has a price.

I am just guessing at the size, I'm far from a bear expert. I do know the smaller the ears look the bigger the bear. Some guys have said the big one(s) will go 400, I don't know. I am hoping to see one from my stand this fall and introduce him to my 358 Winchester!

That bigger one probably goes 300-350. Bears can get huge. Locally we have had some in the 7-800 pound range. The big ones have learned that when they hear the shots of guys sighting in in the fall, it's time to hole up or get holed up yourself. To get that big they have to avoid getting shot for a couple decades.....most don't make it. I hold out for pics and a success story of your hunt!

JSG, they haven't been here for decades, first sighting was maybe 5yrs ago. Since then it has been more regular, especially just north (10mi) from here. This is the first confirmed sign, that I personally have seen. Been lots of, "they gotta be there" "I'm sure they are in there" talk in the last few years, but no hard evidence until this past weekend. Now we wait and see if we can get them to come to our bait. Getting a shot at one is something different all together!! But, I'm gonna give it a go!

Slippery little buggers! The fuzzies were probably there for a few years before the rumors started. Same thing happened here 30 years ago. Sure there were stories of people  occasionally spotting sign or even a glimpse,(bigfeets as well), but then it seemed all of a sudden there were many and everyone was seeing them. Posted up a pic a few years ago of a 700 pounder they shot a few miles down the road. Gish and Fame fella said he tagged the bear 25 years earlier at 50 pounds, still had the tag. Neighbor lady when I was a youngen said she got spooked out of the huckleberry patch a few times over the years by bears. We all thought she was nuts because nobody had ever seen a bear in the area before. That was the mid 70's, ten years later, TADA!!! we have a season.

Because bears are naturally nocturnal, Sport hunting without bait or dogs can't control the species.  coyotes might be helping a little; cubs and competing for food.

I've seen a number of good size bears within the city limits of Pittsburgh.  Pet dogs do spook them and they run/travel long distances without a 'plan'.  Autos seem to take a toll...at night, black bear doesn't show up well in headlights.

I agree with you guys. The soft feet of a bear does not make it easy to see it's sign, unless it did what I saw, walk right down the middle of a muddy road. I figured they had to be here, but for as much time as I spend in the woods, I saw zero, ziltch, nada for anything resembling a bear. I have never had an undieing urge to shoot a bear, but I will give it a shot close to home. But, road sightings on and off for the last 5-6yrs here close make for something. Hopefully I get some pictures from our new bait sites!!

I shot a 250# black bear one evening, then walked 500 yards to a logging road and called for 'drag help'.  while waiting in total darkness, I heard squirrels going crazy 200 yards off.  Figuring it was the bigger bear I'd been hunting; I listened as he seemed to be heading my way.  I gruffed twice (probably not a smart move).

Then I could hear those padded feet slowly marching toward me and the close by berry bushes.  I carry only a very small flashlight, usually with low batteries (intentionally so as not to scare game when going into the forest.

Not wanting to shoot a second bear, my double barrel 8mm rifle was unloaded.  Now he was withing 15 foot of me; couldn't see him but could hear the shuffling and heavy breathing.  He stayed there for about 3 minutes then moved off.  2 hours latter when the truck headlight came, I could clearly see the bear prints in the powdered dirt road.  He just seemed to have stood there...trying to figure me out.

One of two things here as bears are not stupid. He either thought you might be able too take him, or the other way around and you would be too tough and gamey to have as a snack.
