I have started to save towards rebarrelling my 270 sendero to 7mm RUM.I have heard many stories of early throat erosion on so called overbore chamberings.I was wondering if anyone had any evidence one way or the other. When I started to use my 30-378 everyone said it wouldn't get 800 rounds. At first it ate a bit of throat but has not moved much since the first 100 rounds.I am at 900 without a sinificant loss of accuracy.Have a good one macca.

I fired another shooter's 7mm RUM at the range, and put 3 shots under .6" with factory ammo. It was a real sweet shooter. If you want one, just get it. If you shoot the barrel out, just put another one on it.

Howdy Macca

My younger brother owns a 7mm UM . put a bull elk down at 427 yds with a 140gr Nosler Partition. He is running them out at a little over 3600fps. I'm with SST on this! Let the other guys worry about throat erosion. It wont erode any faster than your 30-378. When it comes to high performance, there are no free lunches!

Get a good barrel and don't let it get to hot ! A fluted barrel will cool a little faster, and therefore probably last longer. I have a 7mmstw and I like it quite a bit. Another way to increas barrel life might be to shoot heavier bullets. A 160 grain will shoot pleanty flat deliver a little more energy on target and increase the life of the barrel.

I agree "don't let it get hot" But I don't know that fluting does anything meaningful towards barrel life.I am not sure that shooting heavy bullets prolongs barrel life either. I don't have any science to prove my point but from where I sit the erosion is the product of the powder burning close to the throat of the barrel. The more times the gun is shot the more burning the barrel receives. But perhaps more importantly the larger size of the of the RUM
prolongs the length of each burn heating the barrel more during each shot. The bullet just seems to shoot past.:-)
