Hello everybody. This is my first post here. I was steered this way by your member here 900F from over at RFC. Looks like you all have a tight group here with some good info passed around. I have a lot of looking around to do here still, but one of the first places I went to was your Joke of the Day section. "Only in Idaho" cracked me up!

Anyways, I live in eastern NC. I retired from the USN about 15 years ago. Working on finishing a second career as an engineer now-a-days. Have done a great deal of traveling btwn the coasts over the years and have seen a great portion of the world too. Enough to know without a doubt that we live in the greatest country on earth, thank the Lord. I enjoy most things outside. Stay too busy with work and homestead chores to find time to do all the things I'd like to do outside as often as I like, so I end up talking about it more than doing it. I like general fresh wtr fishing, flyfishing in the mountains, deer hunting all available seasons, spring turkey hunting sometimes. I reload for my .284Win, .270Win, plan to reload for .204Ruger, .223, 45 Auto, 38 Special. Enjoy shooting my rimfires, and take a lot of varmints after my livestock. Started a few years ago leaving the state for occasional hunting/fishing trips. Started getting into sporting clays/upland bird hunting with SXS shotguns within the last several years after spending almost 50 years as a rifleman. Quite a new experience for me which I've really enjoyed. Anyways, guess I should leave something to talk about later. Best regards..

Goatlocker;

What kinda livestock, what kinda varmints?

And just so yer warned, I'll probably always be after you
to give up that nasty .30-06 red-headed bassard stepchild
& get a 6.5 Swede.

Find the MYGAWDS 2016 thread, & you'll get a fair idea of
what goes on. It's fun enough we've been doin' it for
about 10 years now.

Welcome Goatlocker. Nice to see you post. I'm on a black
bear trip combine with wife trip in Maine. If my posts look
crazy, I've ODed on lobster.

I hunt deer over in the Tarboro area...lots of deer there.

Glad you have joined. It is a little like a club around
here, but everyone joins in. lots of info in the group.

Only two discontentments in the group:
Is vodka better than bourbon?
Is the 270 better than the 6.5 swed?

I vote for vodka and the 270!

welcome.

Welcome Goatlocker,

You bring a fine résumé. No mention of the 30-06 or Knob Creek.
Almost sounds too good to be true? As long as you aren't wrong
handed and a latent Packer backer you'll fit in here just fine.

I'm a long time member at RFC, Arfcom, Handloadersbench, and
Castboolits, and a few others. They are wonderful resources but I find
them very impersonal. This place is more like a family. Every family has
their "black sheep" and creepy uncles but they make it interesting. This
site also has its own family reunion of sorts - MYGAWDS, and other
smaller member get togethers.

DD
Endeavor to persevere.

Thanks for the howdys. To answer some of your questions:

1. The livestock is currently whittled down to about 20 chickens, a pasture ornament horse, great lab, a little mutt, and a sorry cat. If I ever retire for real, gonna put a few beeves back on the pasture, but please LORD, never again any goats! (nothing to do with my moniker). The varmints I contend with the most are red fox (12 in the last 18 months), opossum, raccoons, snakes, owls and hawks. I'm also starting to contend with a creeping invasion of coyotes too.

2. No .30-06 yet, but have always considered it a good all-around cartridge if I could have just one rifle, it would be on the short list. While I did cut my teeth on the 270, I hunt almost exclusively now in open ground with my .284Win which I reload to maximize it's potential which ends up being about the same as a 280 Rem, but in a short case. I am impressed with the 6.5mm BC, and if I ever have another rifle built, might try the 6.5mmX284. Would not turn my nose up at a 6.5mm Swed in something interesting either. Would luv to get hold of a nice European, mauser action mannlicher carbine in 6.5mm Swed.
For close in stuff, I have a handy .44Mag carbine, and a .35Rem lever action. For big stuff, I shoot a .338Win Mag which shoots to MOA with factory Remington loads. Love to fill up 2LT soda jugs with wtr and bust'em at @300 yrds with the 338. It's a hoot!

3. Bourbon, vodka, rum, scotch, gin....I like'em all. Every body's special in their own way, but I don't gravitate there anymore. Although I do occasionally appreciate an aged Venezuelan rum in a properly made Cuba-libre, or a good micro-brew draft beer.

Bear, you mentioned "Tarboro". Would that be the one in NC? I'm about an hr and a half SE from there. We have a good amount of deer here too, and as you probably already know, Craven county has some record book black bear taken here also. Not many seasons go by that I don't run into a bear or several around my neck of the woods.

I read the MYGAWDS 2016 report, looks like a great time! Do you folks do something like that for coyotes too?

Well thanks again for the welcome!

Goatlocker;

Your need is currently met by CZ. This year they are
offering the CZ550 (Mauser action) fullstock in 6.5
Swede. CZ is phasing out the 550 action & converting to
a Tikka-type push feed, the 557. If you want a new one,
this may be your best chance.

My son has that very gun, & won the wood lottery with the
stock too! It is outstandingly accurate. He can ring
the 600 yard 1 foot diameter gong with it, 'bout any time
he points it that way. He's now working up a hunting
load for it, as the accuracy load uses a match type
bullet. Just be forewarned, not everybody wins the wood
lottery, you never know what you're going to get. On the
plus side, they all seem to be very decent shooters.

The big advantage of the Swede over the 6.5.284 is barrel
life. If the .284 is loaded to capacity, the bench boys
consistently report throat problems in fairly short
order, usually just over a thousand rounds. But, they're
very picky too.

I really don't need to be baited into buying another rifle right now.
Need to turn my attention to using what I already have more often. Maybe I'll come across a good conditioned used one or somebody looking to move some new old stock. Let me know if you come across one that looks like a special good deal. I might have to bite if the price is right.

I saw that this site sends notices to your email when you have a new post response. How do I set that up? I don't seem to be getting any of those yet.

So Wing master, can you say which part of Wyoming you occupy? I spent a year living in Green River back in the mid 70's. I attended high school there that year. I remember the day I arrived in town. It was Jun 13th, and snowing. I loved it there! I had a motorcycle and pop's 1966 Bronco to get around with. That's where my 270Win was purchased. Have always loved that part of the country. Outdoorsman's paradise.

I'm NCHS class of 65, that's Casper Wyoming. Lots of
people here interested in motorcycles also. My current
ride is a Ducati 848EVO. One of these days though I've got
to get busy & get my 1980 Husky 390WR up & running again.

Yup, can snow any month of the year in the northern
rockies. Wild temperature swings & waay wild wind too.

"nice European, mauser action mannlicher carbine in 6.5mm

Yea, I hunt Tarboro Nc. I like the weather and lack of
people!
Spent some high voltage time in Ocrahoke and south of
Jacksonville.

You should start planning for MYGAWDS 2017 (I am). Best 4-5
days I spend a year. Great guys, unbelievable shooting of
varmints (figure 150 body count minimum).

Still enjoying Maine coast, another 2+ weeks to go. Can
one OD on lobster????

Husky 390WR, wow! Now your talkin my kind of motorcycle. In 1972 pop rode a 450 Husky, orange tank version. He always told me I could ride if I could start it! Never did get to ride that thang, but boy would it dig a trench in a hard rock road! I broke into the open class bikes sometime around 1982. Bought one of the last KTM 495 air cooled versions that came out before they went to the wtr cooled 500s. So much torque, it really was a thinking man's bike, or else! You should definitely get the WR going again. Wasn't that the Enduro automatic tranny version?

Well as soon as I figure out where the MYGAWDS 2017 info is, I'll have a look and start planning. Sounds like something I'd like to try.
So how many lobster rolls have you consumed so far? I want to visit Maine just to try that stuff fresh. Congratulations on your hunt by the way. I saw that you were trying to figure out how to post pics of the trip. I'm wondering how to put up an avatar. Also wondering if we can link or import in pics from photobucket.

Goatlocker;

MYGAWDS 2017 will be held at the end of April
headquartering in Great Falls Montana. We did a prequel
1 day coyote hunt this year. Got some to appear, but
didn't put anything down.

On t'other hand we shot pre-zactly and ex-cisely 7
million, 401.5 gophers and one marmot over the next
several days.

The 390WR is a wide-ratio 6-speed tranny. Mine has the
Fox Factory Forx on it, Ohlin shocks, Boyesen reeds, and
a Mikuni carb.

I will probably sell the Duc, I don't bend that way so
good anymore, and get something a little friendlier to my
aging body.

Will there be MYGAWDS 2017 planning thread opening up sometime in the future to discuss details, or do we do that via PMs and e-mail mostly?
