I never fish contests, fishing is just to much enjoyment for me to make it into a competition. But I do a Charity fishing contest every year. Had a good day yesterday. We team fish a group of 4 in a defined 60 yard 'beat' along the stream. Beats are drawn and you wish one in the AM and another in the PM. Winners are based upon the total number of inches of fish caught, and they have a judge with each team that measures. My morning was zero inches, but my team had 56 inches. In the afternoon I got everything right and I had 70 inches, remainder of the team had zero. So as a team we were sort of mid-way in the standings. Winning team had 280 inches total. Wining individual had 180 inches. Great time by all. But, this was the first time I caught "Tiger Trout". interesting hybrid. Have any of you caught these things??? |

cross between a brook troout and a brown. They were big fat fish. And they don't breed. some ocur in wild naturally, but only a few. Most are stocked. fight well, like a bull trout with out teeth! |

Bear, that looks more like a Brown that has been in a body of water for some time and was eating plenty of Fresh Water Shrimp... I know of 1 Creek here in the Harrisburg area that gets stocked by a local sportsmens club and they seems to get a mess of tiger trout in their fingerling trout each year to raise... it is common to catch them in the creek the club stocks and they look like this picture, no yellow to them mostly greenish black

From what I understand, the Tiger has become a common fish at hatcheries in PA. As Tas says, since they are a hybrid, they can't breed and they do grow fast.

I've also heard it said that the PF&BC is breeding more tiger trout each year and I've also read that they are sterile...
I have not gotten to talk to anyone from the PF&BC, but it might have something to do with some of the places the stockings go on...they want to stock the creeks so guys have more to catch but maybe do not want to disrupt a wild breeding population of trout?
I know the club I said about above, they stock rainbows and Brooks in 1 of the mountain creek, has a Few of us Pretty MAD about that part of the stocking they do...the 1 guy who is head of the Trout Nursery decided with his 1 son to approuch the Waterways Conservation Officer and get permission to stock the lower portion of the little mountain creek...a few of us knew what was in that creek and kept it hush hush so others would not pound it like crazy, there was a nice population of wild brook trout in that little mountain creek....now all there is, is stocked trout, those stock trout made meals out of those little wild brookies FAST and there isn't any in the lower part of the creek! |

Often I catch native boookies on a smal fly. they are small and I alway release them unharmed. some are only 3-4 inches, but it is nice to catch true NA trout. I don't target them. I even put those german Brown fish back.

Not here in PA, when you find a little mountain stream here in PA that holds Native Brookies, you keep hush hush on its location and enjoy fishing it but do not take any brookies from the stream, they all go back!
