Gopher hunting to day, 61* sunny light winds. We set up shop on a hill 188 to 280 yards from the killing fields. I didn't shoot as well as last time but had MORE shots. A bud and I shooting 243's used 80 shells-( 58 gr,3300 fps) and got 39 confirmed kills. They're on the other side of a big creek so no pictures but a few. Most of the gophers we had to use optic to even see them there only 2" wide and when they stand really straight may be 7" tall, not mush target and the wind was shifting and blowing around 10 mph. That does not sound bad but at over 200 yards a 2" target is VERY small.

D4570: Great pictures of the Ground Squirrels!

Well except for the "wounded" one - and that one is kind of cool anyway.

I can't wait for the upcoming Gopher season to start.

I have been on hold for range work with a couple of Rifles for 3 weeks now - wind just won't let up here in SW Montana.

I have the loads worked up and settled on already but I switched some scopes and just need 30 minutes of "calm" to get them re-aligned"!

Yes indeed the diminutive Ground Squirrels are WAY smaller than Rock Chucks and Prairie Dogs - but that is part of the fun.

It gets expensive missing those tiny targets out at 250 yards with my centerfires so 95% of my Gophering is done with rimfires at 60 to 150 yards.

Again great pictures and "hurry up spring".

Hold into the wind

I hope the bad winter we're having won't mess them up to bad.

That struck me as funny. Everybody I met last year wanted them all exterminated. LOL
