Wife's '96 v8 cougar has "check engine" light on.  OBC says it is bank 2 (passenger side) oxygen sensor.  one handed guys don't change anything with  a bolt.LOL

Question, if I never change it, what would be harmed.  I think it means a little tail pipe gasses, maybe rough running and slight change in gas mileage?  any thoughts?

my guess is they tell the computer how to adj air/fuel ratio for best performance.........if the O2 sensor is wacky it may affect performance ie gas consumption or other wise general running......I just changed one in each of my vehicles........and I think they are spendy.....can't 'member the exact cost but not really cheap....hint....wait until the engine/exhaust system has cooled down before trying to remove unit.....hot fingers result ifn you don't wait......

......put car on ramps, go on diet to fit under car better....that will allow time for hand to heal and you will then have two hands and a slim body.......

Bear, I've had several bouts with O2 sensors.  Here's what I'd do:

1)  Just cause the computer error says O2 sensor - It doesn't necessarily mean the O2 sensor is BAD!  Twice for me, the O2 sensor was OK, but was getting a bad reading and all I needed to do was change an air and fuel filter.  Try this first.

2)  If O2 sensor reading is BAD enough it will sometimes screw up the computer control of the fuel/air mixture.  You should be able to notice a rough engine when this happens.  If engine is missing some still after changing the filters, your probably do need to have the O2 sensor changed.

3)  If you haven't noticed the rough engine and/or a drop in gas mileage - Do this test:  at about 25 MPH put car in neutral and slowly coast to a stop with foot off gas petal.  If engine still runs smooth through this test, you may be OK the just drive it.  But engine light will stay on.

Up until a few years ago I was a mechanic. That means I drive vehicles that could be fixed in an afternoon, but I don't work on my own cars. So I drive cars with check engine lights on, rough idling, poor gas milage, etc.

That being said, A car my wife had had the check engine light on for about the last two years we had the car. The computer showed the code to be an 02 sensor. I don't check gas milage, but it didn't seem any worse than before. It didn't idle rough. It just had that damm check engine light on. I told her to "drive it and let the problem develop" During that time I was secretly hoping the light would burn out. It never did.

That would be my advice to you. then go fishing. By the way, did you get that one handed casting and realing worked out?

I hope this helps. If she has any questions feel free to have her call me. I will help in any way I can.

My check engine light has come on more than once in the last couple of years and goes out after a couple of weeks. They told me it was probably an 02 sensor but nothing serious has happened to my truck as i still haven't got it fixed since day 1.

Thanks guys.

I will change the filters, that seems possible, as the CE light does go on and off.....intermittently.

Just got back from 3 days fishing (watching).  Just can't fish, cast on left hand, bad thumb on right.  I couldn't even wind them in after caught.  I did set one hook on a blue.Cry

Figure we can live with the sensor light.  seems to run good.

Present solution is a small piece of black electrician's tape over light.  fixed!Wink  wife can't see the tape.

My light comes on when ever I have to put that crappy "Ethanol" gas in the SUB. When I get home up here and put in our cheapest regular gas with out alcohol the light goes out and never comes back on.!!!
