 My next winter project.....Keeps me busy and sane, sorta. The action is a FN JC Higgins, bottom metal off a Mark X with the in the bow release, trigger is a Kepplinger, just ordered a MRC barrel today, the wood English Walnut. I still need to decide on sight hardware and rings, I'm leaning towards Mark Lee rings if available. Still undecided on steel buttplate or recoil pad, leaning towards a red pad. Undecided on a scope but likely a Leupold.

 CB, very true and it crossed my mind. No logic was involved in choice by traditional standards. Regardless of what I have the .270 almost always gets the call, thought about another but my last projects are .270's, figured I'd mix it up. I thougt about a '06 or a 7x57 but settled on the 9.3. I like cartridges that do a lot with not much case and it fits there. I also have a internet friend who has a reamer and I'll have him do the barrel. Lastly I figured a Mauser needs a proper cartridge and the 9.3 is a classic. I also want to try some crossbolts, won't need them but close enough. No real good reason for me anymore to choose a cartridge, I just wanted to do a project. Maybe the next one will be for somebody else and they can do the choosing, anymore the rifle is far more intersting than what it's chambered for.

 Some progress and I almost managed to make firewood out of the blank. My first time inletting mauser bottom metal and I missed the center line on the rear. I should have used guides, amateur mistake. Thankfully the blank is wide enough to make it work but a real PITA.

Now the action.... I normally avoid hand held power tools but used a palm router to hog out some wood for the action. I kept it conservative but it was a real help and easy to control.

 I decided to go with a butt pad on this one. I'm not real sure I like skeletonized butt plates, I do like the grip caps.

 waksupi, I hope it shoots well. I heard a few people had left MRC, maybe a rumor, but I hope their barrel quality doesn't suffer.

 Well I got action inletted, no big mistakes but lots of room for improvement. The Kepplinger trigger is huge, sure takes up a lot of space not leaving much wood between the box and trigger. I generally consider glass bedding a failure to bed it right the first time but think I will and add cross bolts as well. The thin web of wood behind the box makes me a little paranoid with this cartridge. Maybe it's because it's my first mauser but I think I prefer working with model 70's. In any case have to practise to get better........ I'll glass it and do some odds and ends and send it off to be barreled, sights, band etc. and then finish inletting the barrel channel.

 Well I was trimming some excess off with the band saw and was greeted with a nice pocket of crap below the bolt release.  I suppose I could have done a repair but it'd still be visible. I promptly turned the blank into knife scales. This is one reason to buy from a good dealer with a return policy. I know this happens but with the low volume I do I think lighting struck early. Anyway live and learn, no tools heaved across the garage and I'm not as pissed as I think I would have been. Time to start again. Maybe I'll buy a new blank to spark the interest . I have a couple but I had them in mind for other projects.

If you have a local "friendly veterinarian" he could x-ray it for you before you begin!  I've used my vets e-ray for lots of projects.

 Thanks, this company will replace wood with hidden defects. It's not so much losing the wood as it is all the labor especially when you're as slow as I am. I don't like overly fancy wood, I looked at a lot of turkish blanks before I decided on this one. Many are just to wild looking IMO.
