Seeing a bunch of roosters up at the ranch but the SD season  for pheasants starts on  the 18th. IA is the weekend after. I am going those 2 weekends and then i am taking the week of Nov 10th off for an iowa hunt. will send a report on bird counts and how my new shorthair is working.

Drae,

Dang, man that's alot of ruffed.

Where you huntin, must be a hell of alot, and the populations must be great.  Never had that kind of sucess in upstate NY.  To thick, didn't see the birds half the time - you using a dog?

 Spot shooter,

Northern Minnesota is where I hunt.  Grouse numbers are down in Mn but Minnesota is the one of better places to hunt grouse(USA), if not the best. The national grouse hunt is held right around here. I do use a dog. I don't ground swat a grouse but I sure will shoot it out of a tree!  My dog gets on a grouse & if he can see it tree. He will bark until I come to finish the job. How could you not shoot  the grouse?  But this only works a small part of the time. Not all grouse tree & not all stay! They are hard to find also. The leaves are starting to come down. Not much time for an old fart like me to get off that shot. But there have been a few unlucky ones!

Had good luck in south dakota this year. 5 of us went out and we got 2 each and saw about 8 more that we didnt get shots at. I know that doesnt sound that good for SD but we live right down against IA and NE and the pheasant population down here is always dismal.  Opening weekend was so hot both of my german shorthairs just about went down to heat exhaustion. had to leave them (and the other hunters in our party) and go get the truck and bring them water. My neighbor actually lost his 4 year old lab after a 1 hour hunt to the heat. I am going to hunt in Iowa this weekend and then have a central SD hunt planned for the 8th of Nov. from all the reports the birds are so thick up there that we will limit out in about 2 hours. Price up there is fairly reasonable. 100 bucks per day per gun and the guy has an old farm house that we can sleep in.

Here are some sharpies I picked up in central MT.  It was more of a deer scouting trip, but I found a few birds along the way.

Here are a couple of more sharpies and a sage grouse.  These birds were taken September 6 and you can see how smokey it was in the background.
