We have had 100's of geese dead in the ice and now in the water in the river. Still seeing many floating around each day.
There has been documented cases of bear having it and have had to be put down as well as raccoon.
Eagles must get it too? How about coyotes?
We went calling around one of our primitive irrigation storage revisors. we put 40 miles on the 4wheelers on two track drifted in roads. We made 20 sets in very good spots that I know have not been called for months.
This lake carries LOTS of waterfowl even when it is frozen. We saw one jackrabbit, no racoon tracks and one old set of coyote tracks. Last year the coyote numbers seamed to be in the midst's of a good increase. This year I have been only out a few time because of either the wind or the amount of snow.  The single coyote we called in yesterday was the first in 2 1/2 months of calling and travailing the back country.
I'm trying to get my head around this, Huston there is a problem.
Pheasants and sharptail seam to be few too, but that could be from the extreme cold and huge amounts of snow we have had.
 I don't know, but maybe bird flu.Shocked

Yay the Berkley pit is what's left of the richest hill in the world.
The water is a pretty shade of copper green, no way as of yet to fix it.
They hire people to shoot any bird that lands on it.

Fortunatly, The coal mines around here haven't been around all that long. They were started in the late 70's and 80's. By that time the EPA had restrictions in place. The reclamation the mines do is really impressive. The reclaimed land is better than it was before mining took place.

Another thing is, as the pit moves they reclaim the land as they go right behind the pit.

Ok back to the question:
I saw this today.
"This is from our local zoo last month in Western Nebraska……..

Tainted Goose Meat ID’d as Cause of Death for Riverside Discovery Center Big Cats

Last month, both of the zoo’s tigers and pumas died, with Avian Flu being cited as the cause of death. Additionally, one of the two grizzly bears also passed away earlier in 2022.

During Tuesday night’s Scottsbluff City Council meeting, Councilman xxxxxxxxxx who was recently appointed as the City representative to the RDC Committee- says they’ve pinpointed what caused the big cats to die.

“It was confirmed as Avian Flu, and they finally figured out the source, it was goose meat that was donated by hunters,” says xxxxxxxxx . “So it was the goose meat that contaminated the animals.”

He said the goose meat donation program has since been suspended."

I have a very bad feeling about this.
ALSO a road killed deer from in town was tested and proved positive for CWD. Ouch
Very very bad.

Well, they say CWD doesn't effect humans eating such.  also CWD tends to not be in the muscles of game that we eat.  Although, I know one board certified neurologist, that claims to have treated dozens of cases.

However, IIRC  avian flu is sometimes contagious to humans.  (often not believed by many drs.).  Like Covid avian flu it is NOT a living organism, just a molecule.  So, no mask will help at all virus including covid are just , too small.

Again like covid, you need to contact the virus molecule and then let it into your body, eyes, nose, mouth or breath it in.  Most viruses reside and are created in the lung tissue, so with birds, we seldom are in a position to breath it in from birds.  Birds usually pass it on thru feces.  And as we know geese have no anal sphincter (they spontaneously dump).  so, avoid bird shit!  Also since viruses are just a molecule, there are a varying number of different types, and theychange annually it seems.  this is why most vaccines are totally ineffective.  Vaccinating humans is usually just to make them seem comfortable during virus exposure; but does nothing.

The best information on disease in animals comes from veterinarians VMDs, not MDs.  wild life folks have about half the information on anything.

If it was indeed avian flu that killed the zoo animals, then I suspect that the zoo people fed all parts, including the lungs, intestines, feces, etc to their animals.  A usual practuce in zoos.

You could consider that they have not found any avian flu in the zoo staff that dealt with the diseased animals.

I've continued to butcher deer and eat venison from CWD areas, but never fed it to my children.  My though was, if any connection it took time to effect humans, and I'd sort of olde.

just some thoughts.

People wise is no problem in my mind.
I'm concerned about the coyote population.
I LIVE to hunt coyotes, one day wolf.
Like Mange we will never get rid of it but I hope the coyotes can adapt to live with it like Rabies and mange. Or like P dogs and just out produce the Plague. Deer will take a hit here.

Not all animals get CWD nor avian flu.  And as you say, some animals can get it but thru generations get an immunity or at least adapt to minor sickness.

keep your fingers crossed.  an always leave some breed stock.  wing always tells a story of a guy who shot out every PD ata town...gone next year!   LOL

I always heard Coyotes and cockroaches would survive an all out nuclear war. Hopefully they will survive the bird flu.
