my main resolution for this year (actually for the next month) is to get reloading room set up.

we got it emptied out this weekend and cleaned down. mrs. taz wants to paint it first and asked me to pick out colors, so things are moving forward. went with a dark spruce or mallard-colored green and white for the trim, and would like plain old black/white tiles or whatever for the floor, although there is something to be said for hardwood floor!

will get some pictures as things progress.

Taz;

Here's a suggestion based on experience.  Gravity works, things will hit the floor.  They will, upon occasion, be things you desperately want, need, to find.  Light colored linoleum, minimum pattern or color variation, some texture - not much, is what you want.  Keep it clean, it makes that itty bitty little bassich easier to find.

 I agree on the color comments, sounds dark. Put a lip around the edge of the bench to keep things from rolling off. Old solid core doors make great bench tops.

good suggestions, all ~ i'll pick a lighter green, since we didn't buy the paint yet - also will go with all white or perhaps tan and white tiles....the room alreadyis somoe sort of light green with an old-style green and grey linoleum which would have been fine for me, but ms. taz says paint, so paint we will.

it used to be a kitchen for an upstairs apartment, still has a 1930s or 40s vintage gas stove (disconnected from gas) in it and a basin-style sink. i'll try to get pix tomorrow.

i've got a good bench area already pre-built into the wall where a countertop used to be, but will definitely add a lip so as to prevent falling objects. unfortunately, the reloading room is the only path to get to #2 son's bedroom, so no lock on the door, but the cabinet with all the goodies will most likely be locked!

yep - CB and i had a conversation about that sometime back....something about a pipe and a couple of flanges....

here's the way the room looks now, emptied out and (mostly) cleaned up. still a little wiping down to do and emptying out of a couple of drawers:

if anyone wants a vintage norge stove/oven with all pieces intact, make me an offer.

Taz;

Also think very carefully about where you place your lighting for the bench.  You don't want to sit in your own shadow, things like that.

you cna't really see it, but above the "bench" next to the sink is some pretty good lighting already. between that and what the room gives, i am hoping it will be enough, but if necessary, i can add light.

 Taz all I can add is on your black tops heres what I did on the cheap,went to our lumber supply here and got some cheap plain white shower panels,I think they are some type of masonite,cut to fit and glue them to what you have and it makes seeing alot better. If you build anything and know the size you want,make it bigger.

the white surface makes sense, tikka ~ i'll have to look into that - will also give an opportunity to put a lip along the edge.

I would check on how old your linoleum is in there, if it's before late 70s.  It will likely have some ( can't seem to spell it, starts with A and they have a bunch of it in Libby)   in it.  It would be better to leave in place and put new linoleum over it, than to scrap it up.  It is generally not shedding fibers until disturbed.  You don't want pay for abatement, so the more discrete you are on this the better.

Everyone had good suggestions. Here is mine. I always am running out of shelve/storage space in my reloading room. Build or buy a couple of bookcases. The kind with doors that lock. I use them to organize my bullets, powder, books etc. It helps keep my work space cleaner and keeps little fingers out of stuff they should not be in.

robert - understood!

MtElk - if you look along that wall in the top picture, i was planning on bulding shelving/bookcases into that wall if the need should arise. as you can see, there is quite a bit there in what used to be the kitchen cupboards, but there is always riim for more! also, for now, it is going to simply have reloading paraphanelia, but once that is there, i'd also like to get my hunting/fishing books, historical books, collections of stuff etc. in there on the walls or in the drawers or shelves as well. there seems to be plenty of room, the only key will be coordination.

Lot's of potential. I've been tweeking mine for almost three years. I just love to spend time there. The mint green paint needs to go.

Endeavor to persevere.

i agree, DD - that mint-green paint has probably been there sice the 50s and although i think i would like it if it were on some other wall, it just doesn't look right there.

some shade between blue and green will replace it - but it won't hurt the eyes quite as much as this!
