Hornady Interlocks

   Needed some bullets for my 8mm Mauser. The local Gander only had 150 grain Hornady Interlocks on the shelf. Anybody use these in other calibers? I've never used less than 170 grainers in this gun. Adequate for deer? Comments appreciated. RD

	My 8x57 double rifle loves them. Once shot a five point buck to my left out of a tree stand, one shot dead deer on the spot. With out opening the gun I watch and it didn't even twitch; all four legs were straight as a board. DEAD. As I raised my head from the scope, I caught movement out of my semi-blind right eye. Nice doe coming down the trail from the right side somewhat behind me. Had to slowly swivel and twist my body around to get the rifle, my left eye (I'm right handed), and the deer lined up. 8mm CRACK...two deer without even having to cycle a bolt handle. Hornady interlocks are good bullet in my book. The 170 and 180 grain 8mm bullets regulate better in my double but the 150 has been a deer killer for me. Rocky, any chance you 8mm is a commercial Mauser? I've been looking for one for years. BEAR

	Bear, Nope my 8mm is a sporterized 98K complete with Nazi hallmarks and matching serial numbers. I've been told that many with matching numbers were battlefield trophys brought home by servicemen. Many of the end of war pieces were stripped and reassembled with parts that don't match. I'm thinking it was home sporterized. It is in a Bishop stock but the inletting is very rough. The bolt handle is a weld on bent handle with a weld that has slag inclusion etc. The original military barrel has hand file marks where the front sight was. All in all not a fine work of art by any means but I've killed about a dozen deer with it. I started with factory ammo which worked very well in it. I then started reloading for it using 170 Gr. Hornady RN. But had a lot of bullet "failures". I always eventually got the deer but had lots of small pieces of lead and copper. Didn't get much penetration. I then went to Nosler 180 BT but they just don't seem to have the accuracy I want though they drop deer like the hammer of Thor. I'm just searching for a good accurate load in a servicable bullet. Maybe I just need to cut back a couple of grains on the 170 RN and drive them closer to factory loads. I've still got a couple of boxes or the old style made before the interlock RN style came out. How fast are you driving the 150 and 170? RD

	My eight is a double, so I don't push it. In fact I seldom load for max velocity in anything except the 416s, but I try to get a case full with enough powder so the empty case volume is minimized. My 170 grain 8x57 is 2400 fps, and the 150 grain is 2450 fps. For deer ecpansion with an 8mm is not as important as expansion with a 6mm/6.5mm/270 you alread have a .323 diameter. BEAR

	Bear, I'm going to try to duplicate factory loads of somewhere around 2375 with the 170 RN but thought I'd step her up to around 2600+ for the 150's. Max loads for the 150 are over 2750. I certainly don't think that's needed. RD

	I USED 180 GRAIN HORNADY INTERLOCKS IN MY 300 WEATHERBY, WHEN I SHOT MY BULL MOOSE....ONE SHOT ONE KILL NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH INTERLOCKS IN ANY OF MY RIFLES, IF I PUT THE BULLET WHERE IT BELONGS, I GOT MY GAME.

	Rocky; Since I don't have an 8mm, I've never used the Hornady Interlocks in 150 in that caliber. However, I'm using them in the .338 Winchester magnum, but haven't taken any game with it yet. The only actual game experience I've had with them is in my son's 6.5 Swede, where they've done an outstanding job. 900F
