I was wondering if anyone has a favorite brand of powder for rifles.

Personally I really like W748 for the 223 and 308, as it flows through my RCBS powder measure very consistently, as does H380 for my 22-250. Both of these have given very good accuracy and velocity as well.

I do like the accuracy and velocity I've gotten from Varget for 308 and H4831SC for 270, but both powders require I measure each and every charge.  I can get them close to weight in the measure, but have to finish it off with a small + or - charge.

In my limited experiences with IMR, I've not had good results. And I've never used VV, Accurate, or Alliant in rifles.

So what are your favorites?

I picked other. I like 748 in the 30-30 and 30-30ai, and 308. It also has done well for me in the 06 and 223.

I like h414 in the 243 and 06. And h4895 does good in the 405

I like imr 4198 in the 223 with light bullets,4831 in the 7 mag ,300 wby and 270. 3031 works well in the 45-70.

I really like rx12 in the 405, and rx15 is showing some promise.

Too many cartridges, bullet and powder combinations to choose fromm

The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

I like ADI powder, which makes a lot of Hogdons powder. It suffers a lot less from temperature change and the slow burners are definetly the best on the market.Bench Mark 2 is the best powder for benchrest I have come across.

I have now become an Alliant/Hercules fan.  I still use some Hodgdon, but it just seems that RL-15, 19, and 22 work well in everything I own.

I assume we all know that Hodgdon and IMR are one company?  They also own an Australian company (ADI) that makes some of its powder like Varget.

So it is all one good family.

Always lean towards IMR for rifles. Use a lot of 3031, 4895, and my favorite cast bullet powder, SR4759. BP I use GOEX. Handguns and some cast bullet rifles I use Alliant.

Alliant/Hercules is my main powder,....

I've tried hodgdon powders while working up loads for my 7mm Mag and my rifle just didn't like the stuff! No matter what brand/make pill I used on top of it to include my favorite Hornady's

The dang stuff would only produce fliers!

Accurate Arms is Second on the list of GOOD stuff.

i like alliant and hodgdon the best. got no use for imr. vv, accurate, and winchester are too hard for me to get ahold of. hodgdon and imr might be the same powder, but the packaging is different, and those imr cans drive me nuts!

i think i might actually use more alliant than hodgdon (2400, rl-15, rl-19, rl-22, and rl-25), but i have plenty of hodgdon, too (varget, h-110, h-322, h-380, h-4831, and i do have some h-4350 but i have weaned my rifles from it, and use it to make sure i get a good start on the charcoals when i grill  ).

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I use pretty much just Hodgdon. I have a pretty decent selection available at numerous small shops but I like the can and like the performance I get.  I've tried Win and IMR, loved the win for a bit but went back to Hodgdon.

I have always had such good success with Norma powders, especially N-205 [ replaced by MRP] N-MRP and N-204, that they have been my favorites for decades. However, availability has not always been great, so I have used them all, and like many other offerings from Hodgdon [and IMR], Alliant, Accurate, Winchester & Vihtavouri. Vihtavuori is starting to find a place in several of my loadings lately...seems quite consistent. Regards, Eagleye.

My powders of choice are Hodgdon, Vita Vhourhi, and Accurate and the Alliant brands.......I have yet to load any cartridge that I couldn't find an acceptable load that would shoot well-------IF THE RIFLE WAS PROPERLY BEDDED...........properly bedded rifles are the biggest problem I have encountered when it comes to accuracy and custom loads...this is 45 years of experience ......but what do I know!!!

Have had very good success with Hodgdon Varget and H 4350

H4350 for 243... 100gr Sierra works great

Just started with HS - 6 for pistol

All are very easy to pour and measure.

But there are many great powders available

Have IMR and Alliant powders too but favor the handeling of Hodgdon

Hello Gene:

With my son's 243, 100gr Sierra can get three shots in a dime at 100yds.

Log book is out in the shed so don't have the particulars here.

a young friend of my daughter pulled  a dear tag for Northern Nevada, and this Saturday she wants to practice with my son's 243.

Am going to use the 100gr as the base ammo

She will more than likely be using a 243 from her family's gun rack and factory ammo, but asked if we would let her practice on my son's. He said it was ok.

When it cools down I want to load up some 80 gr Sierras to try and close the group. Best we got before summer hit was a quarter grouping.

You know Varget does great for 110gr and 165gr in 30-06 for me.

But I like the extreme powders and Papa believes most powders are going to extreme temp compatability.

Just like the way they pour in my set up.

Can mearure accurately and clean.

I know there are others too that are good.

Bojon
