Hey guys, what is your favorite assembly line ammo. Mine would have to go to Remington Core-Lokt, just because of the bullet and the bullet's saying. "Remington Core-Lokt, the deadliest mushroom in the woods."

This may just be me but, that has to be the greatest moto of any bullet out there. Do you guys know of any that can match that?

nh -

i'd have to agree with you. for factory ammo, remington gets the nod from me, for the same reason!

i am sure winchester performs fine, but for some reason it has always rubbed me the wrong way. stupid to get a vibe like that just from a box of ammo, especially when i prefer winchester brass and primers for reloading.

as for federal, i like it, but it just doesn't have the same STYLE as remington.

I have also found that Federal is less clean than Remington. THe bore gets a lot dirtier when shooting federal than with remington. That is another reason why i like Rem Core-Lokt.

Hey Klallen, you talk about factory ammo like most people talk about drugs. Maybe it is because the cartridges that are your favorite, are way too expensive to buy in factory ammo form. If you had an aught six, then you might find out that Hornady light mags are better than a lot of handloads, and it means taht you dont have to buy dies, and primers, and empty cases, and bullets. Don't worry im not one of those people who dont handload. I roll my own .44 magnum cartridges for a Ruger 96/44.

nonsense. a good, tight handload will outperform anything put out by the factory. velocity may be higher or lower than factory, but what counts is accuracy, and quality handloads will embarass the factory fodder every time out. and do it for 50-66% less cash outlay - which is more shooting per dollar, which makes the shooter a better shot...

since i very rarely shoot my 22's, i have no need for factory ammo...when i used to buy factory stuff, i really liked hornady varmint express for varmint guns, and federal classic for hunting.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Depends on the rifle or handgun it is fired in. I don't believe there is a huge difference in quality between any major domestic manufacturer. Some firearms are picky. What shoots well in one may do very poorly in another. Besides, who buys factory ammunition anyway, except to get brass?

Well guys, i knew that i was wrong but for some reason I said that stuff anyways. Right now i have to get factory fodder because my reloading stuff is all taken apart. My dad is supposed to build me a reloading room, but it isnt going along too quick. We have the area and a couple cabinets but nothing else, so i cant reload.

Morning Ron  >>  Yup !!!  I suppose, by default, that HMR ammo would have to be my favorite factory stuff, huh?  Gonna have to figure out an ingenious way to reload for it.  Maybe bump it up to a 25 gr. bullet.  SWEET !!!

Howdy NH.  Don't think factory ammo is "as" bad as drugs.  Real close, though.  Guess if you got a press and a scale, you've got little use for it.  Kinda like buying H2O in a bottle at the store when you got the stuff for free at home    .  I do use factory on occasion, but it's a rare, rare occasion.  Later.  >>  klallen

klallen:

Yep, my favorite is Hornady .17 HMR.  Just can't seem to get enough of it.  What do you think of Hornady's other ammunition?  It seems to be pretty price competitive.  Since I have a .405 Winchester I have to go with Hornady as well.

Speaking of rimfire reloading, I guess there was such a thing.  I read the other day that the Indians (Native Americans if you prefer) reloaded the Henry rifle .44 caliber rimfire cartridges such as the ones used at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.  Does anyone know how the heck they did that?

Since I now have a .416 Rigby and a .35 Whelen I think I am going to have to jump into the reloading pool.  It just seems so dang complicated, though.

Y'all take care.

Is Remington the only company to make factory fodder for the .35 Whelan or do they not make it any more.

sluggo-

at first glance reloading seems very complicated and inherently dangerous. however, take it one step at a time, and next thing you know you find yourself in a groove at the bench...

also, forums like this one will take a couple of years off your learning curve...

I agree with dakotasin, basic reloading isn't difficult. Lots of information available on the web, much more info than I had starting out.  Get a good manual, like Lyman's, or even Richard Lee's book and do some reading. They will cover all the basics for you. I haven't hunted with factory in a lot of years.

DON'T start loading to try to save money. It isn't going to happen. You will possibly spend even more, but you will shoot a lot more for the same amount.

When I shoot factory my 30/30 likes Rem 170's, the .308 loves Federal premium. 168gr.spbt.  The.357 PMC 158 sp, Win 125JHP (the house load) and just about anything else except lead round nose. The ancient 5 screw Mod-10 only digests UMC 158 gr. lead rd. nose.

Evening SLUGGO  >>  I guess there was also a conversion of some kind to the obsolete 5mm RemMag rimfire making it a centerfire of some sort.  I don't know all the particulars but did hear about that one.

Looks like our .17 HMR is gonna fair much better than the 5mm did.  Hell, it already has faired better.  I'm glad.  I always thought that the rimfire scene had lagged behind a bit, as far new things to try.  And I always wanted to get back into rimfire, just had no interest in the choices.  This .17 was right up my alley and I love it.

Get into reloading ASAP.  Especially with having to feed that Rigby of yours  ;o)  .  It only gets as complicated as you want it to be.  If you only want hunting quality accuracy at moderate hunting ranges, it's straightforward and easily achieved.  You expect more out of your cartridge and it can get much more in depth and time consuming.  You can get as crazy with it as you like.  I love it.  It's a great hobby, for sure.  Lots of folks more than willing to help ya out, as well.  Later.  >>  klallen

Funnily though I use remington rifles I hate their factory ammo.Never been able to get it to group as good as winchester or federal.I prefer to reload and do it for the better accuracy. Some of the competitions I shoot require factory ammo so I still buy some.

Sluggo,Reloading is cool and the results will leave factories for dead.My son helps me and we do 300 to 500 centrefires per week. There is something very satisfying about creating a load that shoots tight little groups or drops your game.Have a good one macca.

don't let the bastards grind you down.
