A buddy that has never shot a turkey and I gave it a "shot" today.
I told him I wanted to leave in the dark, that put it about 5:00 AM. 5:30 came and I get a text "running a bit late" be there in a sec... 5:45 we hit the road, he drove. Way light by the time we got to where I had hoped to find a turkey.
A little before 7:00 we left the truck hidden behind a slash pile. Both of us had white camo top to bottom, to bad there wan no snow to speak of.
I have an old box call and one blow up hen decoy, nothing high tec.
A quarter mile walk and we sat and tried a call.
Instantly we had a response, it sounded a ways off.
tried 20 minutes and no closer, so we picked up and went on up the closed forest road. Maybe 300/400 yards and tried again. Instant response, up the hill a little behind us, he must have been on the move. OK now we thought maybe if we went up over the ridge and look down in to it to see if we could put eyes on him. It was very steep and littered with branches form the fire prep going on for a burn.
Hard walking and slow.
About 200 yards and I see him feeding and walking very slowly to where we first started.
DANG, I tried calling and he had NO reaction, tried a little more nope just feeding along.
OK Here we can keep after him and stalk him down.
That's what we did. We snuck as close as we could and ran out of cover. We split up 30 yards or so, he was behind some brush so we charged, if you call two old fat guys trying to get up a hill charging.
My buddy got to about 50 yards from him when he came out behind the brush. So he pulled up and shot, feathers flu, but the bird started to run, he shot again more feathers. The bird took off flying.
Good thing he headed right to ME.
I'm using My new inherited Stoeger DBL 12 and hand load of 1.5 oz BB lead 3" full of steel powder.
That did it Folded in the air. I had to side step to keep from getting hit by the dead bird plummeting to the ground...
Not pretty but dead turkey on the ground!
His first and I got blood on my brothers un fired 12 gauge, NICE.
Home in time to pick up the Granddaughter from school and start dinner.Big smile

Congratulations.

opening day I was at family wedding in NC.  Got home late last night, so this morning was my opening day.

Birds are way down in this state.

Got in 1 hour before sunrise, all set up.  Not a gobble all morning; so I decided to pull at 10:30.  Walked and got my truck and moved it up close to my set (less carrying).  Packed everything but my 4 decoys.  stripped out of heavy weight camo.  walked to deks and hear a fain gobble.  WOW

Ran to truck got x-bow and scampered back;  called and answered  till noon (our end of legal hunting).

Bird had circled to come in but as I saw him 40 yards away he spotted truck and mosied off...still calling.

As scarlet said....tomorrow is another day!

Can you chase them or shoot them out of the air?

You are legally only allowed to call toms to you.  illegal to stalk, or advance toward a bird you hear gobbling.

I do it legal and like to call birds to within 10 yards and arrow them.  Many (most) guy run 'n gun, illegal.

Best part is getting them to WALK to you.  So I use detailed camo blind.

So......to address the elephant in the room.......what did you make for supper?

Good bird!

I prefer the fall hunting when we can use a rifle. I go for the smarter birds. Been shot at before, know how to speak turkey and know the calls aint them! Rarely do they ever get inside a couple hundred yards. Long beards, sharp spurs and 20+ pounds. Not easy to fit them into a roaster.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

In my region of MT (#4) they took the fall season away this year, and opened the entire region for hunting instead of just spots. Yes I have shot WAY more turkey with my deer rifle then ever called in.

Illegal in Pennsylvania to use a rifle in our fall season.   heads up Jsg

Shotgun only and archery,  Shot size must be #4 or smaller.  I like 7 1/2 shot in light trap loads, head shots only for me.

ShockedShockedShockedShockedShocked.....UGH!!!!!

I personally like to just walk up to them and use a salt shaker with some fresh ground pepper....fine....so as not to offend the birds.

Don't worry, when that 7 1/2 shot breaks wings and just bounces off after wounding them. Those coyotes will appreciate the efforts.

Nice bird.

I've never called a tom into shooting range but have had them answer my poor quality calling. It's almost as exciting as calling in an elk.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

...........The elephant still is not addressed......I'm back on keto....crave real food!!!!!

Seems it's an issue these days with airmen in the military using blow darts on PD's and gophers. Military has listed them as lethal weapons. Headshots with a blow gun would be manly....not like those folks with the spray and pray method skeeterguns....
