What kind of sleepin bag is best fer elk huntin?  I've benn usin a a eddie bauer from the early 60's, heck could be 50's sleeping bag.  It's canvas and goose down filled, used it fer the last 20 years in all kinds of conditions.  I think its time to make her antique and get somethin thet I won't worry about hurting to bad.  So lookin at Cabela's - shoot, all this high tech stuff.  What's best?

I've been using a Slumberjack mummy bag with Quallofil insulation. I believe it is rated to -10F. It is comfortable and warm. Heck in the wall tent I sleep on top of it most of the time, unless it is really cold out. I see that they have a newer insulation called Thermolite out that is supposed to be even better. The only thing that I would do different is to go with a rectangular bag instead of the mummy style, more footroom. But then I am getting a little old. Other than that, it depends on where you will be using it most. If it is for cold weather hunting then I would stay at or below the 0F rating.

Buy the best bag you can aford with the lowest temperature rating. You can alwasy unzip it, but if it's cold, it's hard to stay warm. I hunt a lot of late seasons where it might be 15-20 below. I always have a polar fleece insert on the inside and a cowboy bed rolll tarp on the outside. We let the fire go out at night in the wood stove, and many times have the coffe pot froze solid in the morning. The new synthetics are a lot better than down. I like the rectangular bags also, but they don't keep you as warm as a mummy, which I have never been comfortable in. To me , a good bed is the single most important comfort in an elk camp.. We also use air beds, and pack a battery pack and pump in with us.

I say if yer eddie baur is still good, its all you need.  I hate mummy bags.  Hate them plastic fillers they got now too.  I'm what you call an active sleeper.  My current bag is a Slumberjack Big Timber, rated to -20.  Roomy an' warm, thick canvas.  I love it.  Hard to git out of on cold mornins.  If it had goose down instead of the fillin' its got, I'd love it more, but only on principle.  Now I reckin' a lot depends on if you got pack animals or camp by the road.  My bag weighs 'bout 15 lbs.  Wilderness hunters that backpack probly need down an' one of them itty bitty hippie backpacker bags.  I figur that if God wanted you to carry stuff on yer back an' brew yer coffee in an aluminum pot, he wouldn't of invented mules.

"if God wanted you to carry stuff on yer back an' brew yer coffee in an aluminum pot, he wouldn't of invented mules.  And, I presume."

The only comment I have to that is that I have, more than a few times, heard mules referred to as "God-damned" and/or "Imp of Satan", "Imp from Hell" and other perjuratives, not of a religious nature.  There seems to be a difference of opinion.  In my experience, the vast majority of the opinion would not vote God as the inventer of mules.

Get the best bag you can afford; along with the rest of the equipment. I like down in a rectangular bag. Nylon makes it hard to keep in a polar fleece in the bag but is earsier to pack. You may make it much more usable by filling a water bottle with very hot water and putting a wool hat over the waterbottle and putting it in the bag. The water bottle will my warm in the morning if you don't sleep in. Make sure you have a good pad between you and the ground. Cold weather camping is just no fun without proper gear, food, shelter and footware. The right company means everything.

There's surely a fine line atwixt demons an' angels.  The bible says the antichrist will be born from God's own house.  An' look at all the problems with them catholic priests.  So I reckin' I'll take mules over homo priests, an' let God decide what kinda company I'm keepin'.  Mules is more like chilrin than devils.  They can irritate the dickens outta ya, but in the end, you gotta love 'em.
