Anyone around here use one of these things? Thinking about picking up one of those Italian repro steel framed Remington 1858's or Colt 1860's. Best part is you don't have to be 21 to buy one, and they sound like a lot of fun. Cabelas has them for around 175ish. So, any takers?

Percussion revolvers can be a lot of fun. Stick with a steel frame, whichever bne you decide on. IME, the Colt clones handle better, the Remington clones are more mechanicly accurate.

NH, I've had one for years. 1973 I think. They are a hoot to shoot but clean up is a real pain in the ass. Barrel, Cylinder (including scrubbing around all the nipples), and frame all need to be spotlessly clean and oiled or they rust big time. Remingtons are tougher and more accurate but Colts are neater in my mind. I've even shot a few critters with my .44 Italian Colt clone. Performance is not unlike a 44 Special. Just be sure to use felt wads under the ball or grease over the top of them to preclude chain fires from cylinder hole to cylinder hole. RD

Well, I have pretty much settled on a Colt 1860 Army from Cabelas with the starter kit. I have a couple guns I want to unload (Ruger 10/22 I never shoot and a Ruger blackhawk .45 Colt that Ruger won't fix the cylinders for, and I don't like it enough to pay to have it done), so I can pickup a cap and ball revolver and put the rest towards a .338 barrel for the coming Tikka.

I will get a good holster and such down the road, but it isn't really a priority.

NH;

That's the only one I'd personally get.  And I've been thinkin' I might have to do that.  The stainless is the way to go for cleaning purposes.  Not historicaly accurate, but in my case, I couldn't care less.  Yes, it's pretty.  Did you get it?

About 10 days ago I got one of the 1860 models from Cabelas.  It is made by Pietta in Italy.  I'm not an expert in C&B revolvers, but it seems very well made.

I've taken it to the range about 3 times, groups very tight, but about 2 inches to the left and 4 high at 10 yards.

I posted last week on the pistol board, for comments.  NL, you might check that post, lots of good inffo from some people.

I'm loading 29 grains of Pyrodex and using .451 balls.

I liked it enough, I'm buying one as a present for my one brother.  Seems to me the 3 Bears should all have an 1860.

Did you use regular Pyrodex or did you use Pyrodex P? Ruger suggests to use a .457 caliber round ball, as it gives a better gas seal, and the loading lever is strong enough to shove the ball into the cylinder. I am going to start with 20 grains of Pyrodex and go up from there, with Crisco over the ball to make sure I don't get any chain fires. I think I have some pyrodex laying around here somewhere, but I will have to order the bullets. This will be a great firearm to begin bullet casting with since the round balls are fairly light and are simpler to cast (I think). This Ruger Old Army handles like no other handgun I have ever held. It is simply amazing. I hadn't really considered the Ruger until I handled one this weekend at the gun show I was working at. I picked it up and was just amazed. The dealer I was working for also showed me the conversion cylinder for .45 Colt. Might have to pick one of those up in a few months.

Oh, and just so you guys know, that is my pistol sitting on my computer chair in that picture above. Isn't she a beauty? I can't wait to touch this thing off! It will be a pain to clean, but since it is stainless it will show the fouling better than a blued gun would, so it should be easier for me to get spotlessly clean. Also, since it is a Ruger, I can load up some pretty heavy loads for it to make it a viable backup gun for hunting.
