Thought it was time for this old question.
what is your idea of the best "ALL_ROUND" big game cartridge. Figure we are talking only lower 48 states big game. Should be factory available loaded. What is you nomination and why???

I agree with D.
I have a 30-06 and haven't hunted with it for many years but if I was only able to keep one rifle that would be it. Bullet choice and availability of factory ammo are two strong points. If I'm not mistaken, you can get bullets anywhere from 110 grain up to over 200 grain. Theres a suitable bullet for anything you wanted to hunt with enough powder behind it to do the job.

I have shot coyotes and P dogs with a 110, '06 at 3500 fps. It's NOT fur friendly.

Only had one '06. Just sold it to DD. replaced it with a 7 mag.
The '06 and 270 would certainly be in my top picks. But I think the 338 Federal would be at the top of my list. compact, based on 308 brass, and shoot 180-250 gr. Certainly the 338 Federal is not popular

That would be a good choice too.
What is a useable range with the .338 Federal?

The boy shoots that sometimes, he thinks 200/250 yards is about right.

Heavy bullets do kick.
That is why the 6.5 has become popular

I've had great luck hunting with my 6.5X55. I've killed antelope, Deer, elk, and lots of prairie dogs and a few rabbits with it. When we were together IBD even shot a rattle snake with it.
It really is nice to shoot. I've shot 50-60 rounds at a prairie dog town and didn't have a sore shoulder afterwords.

Could have been luck?
A few years ago, I was shooting a lot of pistol. Hunting I used a T/C contender in 30 Herret. Once it stalked up on Groundhog in a wheat field, keeping a round bale between me and it. When I got to the bale, I could see a second one about 30 yards farther. I line it up with the first one not knowing if the 120gr bullet would deflect. BINGO, two for one. But groundhogs are 8 times bigger than PDs. fun stuff...and memory trophies.

Doing annual cleaning of all guns.
looking at my 257 roberts bought in 1977. At the time I thought it was best all round varmint/deer rifle. Still seems to fit that class pretty well.

I'm a big fan of the .257 Roberts. My twin daughters have matching Winchester model 70 Featherweights in .257 Roberts.
my daughter shot an elk at 452 yards with hers. It ran about 30-40 yards. It's hard to argue with that.
