My son bought me a Black Powder revolver for my birthday. I have shot muzzle loading rifles and shotguns but never a BP Revolver. It came with a starter kit, the kit has two types of wads, "Wonder Seals" and " Wonder Wads".

Can anyone tell me which one goes between the powder and ball, and what the other one is for?

Thanks for any help

Answer...neither go near the powder.  Both are for over top of the ball.  they are said to prevent crossfiring, a thing that has never been documented as having happened!!!!

I use the Old yoke brand in my 44 revolver.

These are fun to shoot.

Load in this order:
Powder: check for proper amount/granular size in book that came with gun (ALL 6 chambers in cylinder),

Ball of correct dia. for the bore (seat ball with the loading lever under bbl) shaving some lead in the process is not a bad thing,

Wad or grease cookie as some call the "wonder wads", (they may/can contain a lubricant to help keep the bore clean) if you choose to do so....or grease (messier)

then when dun loading,

Cap all the nipples
(on the revolver) with appropriate size primer cap & shoot.

Last step:  REPORT BACK TO US ON YOUR EXPERIENCE AND FUN FACTOR.

Thanks for all the replies, the manual that came with the pistol has a loading instruction. I wont go into all the language (too long) but the sequence is as follows:

Hammer in half cock position

Pour power charge in cylinder

Lay a precut patch (wonder wad or wonder seal?) or a dose of semolina over the muzzle

place a lead ball onto the opening of the chamber

Seat ball into chamber, ball should lay .040 below the cylinder edge, do not crush the powder.

Fill the remaining portion of cylinder with grease, or Crisco

Place percussion caps in cylinder(s)

Pistol ready to fire

It doesn't say what the thickness of the patch should be. but recommends FFFG powder. Anyone Know what semolina is?

They say to use a precut patch over the powder, but give any size thickness for the patch, could they mean one of the wads? or a patch like the ones you use in a BP Rifle$

Im probably making this more complicated than it should be, but I like having both hands.

Irish:, Im going to give loading sequence a try with the wonder wads.

I have the same revolver, the felt wad, is for over powder and the wax one is for over ball.  After I used up the ones that came with it, I just used crisco over ball.  The felt wad, semolina, or cornmeal is just to take up space between powder and ball. cylinder has room for 35grs of powder, but with only 15gr load, something needs to take up extra room.  I figured since it's a reb revolver, cornmeal would be good choice, cream of wheat would be, better suited for yankees.

It looks like 35gr of FFF is max load for steel frame and 25gr FFF is max for brass frame.  If you shoot max all the time, frame could get loose, recomended load is 12-15gr for ball loads, in 44.  I've been shooting 15gr and it works fine, it seems like it's regulated at 25yds.

The balls that come with it are rough, the better balls, without the sprue, shoot much better.  I haven't had time, to use it yet, but I got mold for it.  I learned after I got the conical one, ball shoots better and is easier to load.  .454" balls shoot better in mine than .451".

I'm not sure if spacer over powder is needed, from what I've heard most don't use it.  I know you don't want airspace, between BP and ball and ram doesn't seat ball, deep enough to be against powder, on mine without it.

They're a lot of fun, but I'm glad we have better pistols now.  I sure wouldn't want to be in shootout with it.  You can see why they carried extra pistols.  I couldn't imagine loading it on horseback or in heat of battle.  I'm guessing one gets better at it with time.

Varmint, take these guys word as one sent from on high. As I mentioned earlier, I am the owner of a Walker replica. I was sort of stumped with what to feed it, and they sure gave me an overwhelming response. Personally I don't put a wad between the bullet and powder. I load mine with "paper" cartridges. I saw it on youtube and it made sense and looked a lot quicker to load that way so I make up a lot of paper cartridges before I go to shoot it. They are easy to make, and you get rid of all those worthless rolling papers from a misspent youth.......Kingpin

Enlighten me.  I can see this working well.

Do you roll charge and ball, like old BP paper cartridge, tear off end, dump charge in cylinder and load paper and ball?  Do you put lube on ball end of cartridge?  Do you use smaller ball, due to paper thickness or does it just cut off, when seating ball?

I made a mandrel out of a piece of delrin, but you can use wood if you want. I made it about .030 smaller than the bore diameter and kissed the end of it with a ball end mill. I roll the paper around it and lick the gummed strip and seal it. I pull the edge past the concave that I made with the end mill, and crimp it into the concave. I used crazy glue to cement the round ball to the paper concave and pull the whole thing off the mandrel and put it face down into a loading block, open end up. After I get a quantity made, I use my powder measure to fill each paper tube. When I have them all filled, I twist the open closed tight to the powder charge and snip off the ends. What once took about 5 minutes to load, now takes about a minute to just drop the charges and seat them. You can see it done on YouTube if you look for paper charges for black powder revolvers. The only thing different that I do is make the end of the mandrel concaved..................King
