4" of snow calling for -20* in two days and I saw "GOPHERS"!
Prairie dogs don't hibernate like gophers, they don't come out in blizzards but are out all year on sunny days even in 4 feet of snow.
Gophers go down when it gets dry and the food is gone, normally mid September. It is no surprise for them to start showing "UP" after the first of the year.
So actually there a bit late and will be very active mid March. It just looks stupid.
I have read it's last years yearling male that get up first to start claiming there homestead. Then the big males try to run them off when they get up. The Females are last to come out, with there pups.
city gophers come up first and go "Down" latest, more food and such in town I guess.
We have been in a very low ebb in there cycle of life, I'm sure our intense drought is not helping.
I'm going to try shooting them with my new Ruger 45 colt...Big smile

That sounds like fun. What range do you think is reasonable with a .45 Colt?

I'm sure your cost per round is more than a .22 Long Rifle but the level of fun will be more than enough to offset the cost of admission.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

I don't count the cost of the brass or dies, already have them and the last a LONG time.
I'm casting bullets so it's just powder, primers and cost to replace the lead I already have. how many shells can you get out of a pound of powder at 15 to 20 grains of powder.
I bet I'd only be slightly more then shooting 22 long rifles.
I have the red dot sighted in at 25 yards, so 75 feet?

Loading at 15 grains you could get 466 out of a pound of powder. That's a lot of pretty cheap shooting. Especially for a centerfire.

That's a pretty good distance for a hunk of lead that big.
