Thinking about getting back in this game, I used to play at it big time but found I could not afford to shoot as much as I needed to get where I wanted to be, still might not be able to but I do love the game.

Nope don't shoot no traps, them trappers get a bit pissy when you do that to their equipment.

Rick, I love trap shooting. The rythym of the shooting on a good squad, the smell of the various shotgun powders, (I can always tell a green dot shooter)the comradre and crap you get when you drop a bird you should have had but lifted your head a little too quick. What's not to like about it? I too have never been able to shoot as much as I like mainly due to work obligations. Sporting clays is OK, skeet is better than SC, but trap is the mind game that pits you against your own concentration. You are a pretty fair Sporting clays shooter if you can get 75% of the birds, every body expects you to drop a skeet bird or two, but if you don't run 'em clean in trap you ain't s@%^.
RD (Guess what I ain't s@%^).

I used to shoot - a lot. The area I lived in, if you were willing to travel to different clubs, there was shooting every night except Friday plus day shooting on Weekends. Then I quit. Family and work. Now that I have the time again, the area I'm in now, the shooters are all Skeeters, a game I don't like. I was one of them Green Dot shooters. I also love the smell of Federal paper shells. DC |

I was shooting trap every Wednesday nite,Satudays & Sundays from the 70's into the 90's then I got burned out and only shoot occasionally using a 1924 Win Mod 12 converted to trap & a Rem 870 Wingmaster with a trap stock & 30 inch full choked ribbed trap barrel. To save costs I bought a lot of $5 per 25# bag of reclaimed shot mined from ranges in this area and still have quite a bit.I've used green, red & blue dot , win 540,700 & 800x,unique & hs7.

I used to shoot a lot of trap, now I shoot a lot of skeet. I like them both, and will play any game to get in some shooting. Sporting clays is nice too. We call it "redneck golf" because you even get exercise while shooting................................Kingpin

There is a plantation just north of here in GA that is what I call a little upper crust, a round of sporting clays on thier range will set you back just over a grand, little to rich for my blood.

Rick, I suppose you'll laugh, but for trap I usually shoot an 870 Express with a modified stock and a Morgan Pad. I can usually guarantee that I'll have the cheapest gun at the range. I modified it to fit me about 15 years ago when I was a poor guy feeding a couple of kids at the time. I shoot it well enough that I just keep on using it for most trap shooting. I also use a Win. Supreme OU but I don't shoot that near as well for trap. It does seem to work OK for SC though. I just can't seem to make it work on the trap range. RD

Rockydog I have used a field gun on the trap range more than a dedicated trap gun, really pisses a guy off thats shooting a Perazzi or other high dollar gun to get beat by one

Rick, I just love it when I slip my extra full Turkey choke in for a little 27 yard Annie Oakley round. An 1 1/4 of 7 1/2s over a heavy load of Blue Dot or Longshot.....

One of my first ever shoot offs was in a game of five bird against a guy shooting a Lutic (sp) My Dad was there and since I was the first shooter I got to choose where the shoot off would be shot from, Dad told me to take the trap gun advantage away from him by walking up and putting my foot against the back of the trap house my field gun was right at home at that range, his trap gun shot like a rifle that close and I won the Ham

I started out in junior league trap in 5th grade and was on some very good teams. Last time I participated in anything like that was 25 years ago. I finally have a job that I'll be home enough to join a leage again. On that reclaimed shot, where do you find that stuff, at the gun club? Gander Mtn. has new shot for $44 son! has the price gone up. I used to use 700X or Blue Dot with AA's and 7 1/2 shot. DD Edited by deaddog |

Started shooting trap at age 12 at the San Salvador trap club. After comeing hime to Boise the 70 MPH birds sure seemed slow compaired to the 90MPH international birds. Was soon a member of ATA and held that for several years. After high school I slowed down a bunch, and since collage I really have not shot much trap in the last 20 years. Still go to a turkey shoot here and there, but thats about it. Also loved skeet when we where in El Salvador, never shoot much state side. As for some of the talk up a few posts. I shot most of my trap with a 870 SA which is a trap/skeet grade, but to most people looking at it, just a kid with a wingmaster. I have grown up shooting all the high dollar stuff and even have some really cool stuff. Browning Belgine superposed release triggers. Dad has more trap guns than anyone I have ever meet. Perazzis, Francki, even a Westly Richards, But he still takes the BT99's out more often than anything else. Have no idea how many of thos dang things he has. Keep asking him why own multiples of the same shotgun? I just like BT99's he says and smiles.

Only trap gun I got left is an 870. Shot an Ithaca single for years, and an 1100. Probably not get back to it as I'm right handed and lost most of my sight in my right eye. |
