Fella's;

Rod's not a 'new guy', he's been BSB'ing in more than one incarnation of the site.

As for the choice.  Rod, you really need to get in touch with Rob1.  I happen to know that he could quite possibly trail an item in front of that'll cause all sorts of consternation.

 How does the .350 case match up with the 8mm short mag? Might be easier to just get something chambered in the short mag? CB speaks of the infamous 8mag, I dumped a crap load of money in it and once the battle of getting it right was won I lost interest. Not real sure what will become of it, half the time I forget I have it.

The case capacity of the 350 mag is nearly identical to the '06.  So I'd expect the 8/350 to be like a 8-06.  This was a common round for WW-2 returning guys to chamber 98 Mauser.  There are still lots at the local gun shows.  Seems to be a very good round for all NA game.

Problems with the 350 mag were that the magazine was short for heavy bullets and that reduced the powder capacity.  The 8mm being a smaller bullet diameter might have the same problem, in a short action.  If you were to use a long action, I'd prefer a 8-06 AI improved.  Easier to get/make brass, better feeding, better performance with heavier bullets ( did I say 'no belt'?   LOL  )

I guess I'll agree with Bear but also offer another opinion. If you like the idea of an 8mm the original 8mm Mauser is no slouch either when handloaded with the right components. I know mine does anything I've ever asked it to. I think it will probably equal an 8mm-06. The biggest reason for the 8mm-06 was the fact that 8mm brass was hard to come by and guys just had the mausers reamed and bought a set of reloading dies. RD

Agree Rocky.  My 8x57 is just as effective as an '06. My brother and I both hunt deer with double rifles; he has an '06 and I have a 8x57.  a fair comparison, mine has killed more deer than his and all of mine were with ony one shot.  175 grain Sierras +
