For hunting elk in the back country - possibly up- or down-hill, possibly in the brush or timber?

.270, .280, .30/06, 9.6mm....or .260?

And which bullet?

For myself, I'll make it interesting and go with the .30/30, using a .170ish-grain standard bullet....but only under 100 yards.... Shocked

Of the choices you offer /06 with 180gr bullet, better 30 cal option is 300wm with 200gr, 338wm with 225 or 250gr, is even better choice. 9.6mm is short range option, but cross canyon shot would be out.

I have killed many an Elk with a 130 grain .270.

Last year I got my elk with a 150 grain .308. I couldn't tell the difference between it and the .270.
I'm guessing the elk couldn't tell the difference either.

I've gotten a couple cows with SBH in 44mag using 325gr cast in weapon restricted zones, they were rather close range though. I've been able to tell by how quick they drop, that they can tell difference. With /06 they don't drop in their tracks, quite like they do with 300wm or especially 338wm. With 44mag, their legs just folded, in few steps and was like they run outta gas, no dramatic collapse. I haven't got as many elk, as some on here, but I seen many taken and power along with shot placement matters.

of the choices offered in first post....I'd opt for the 30-06 with 180 bullet designed for elk sized animals

Except for the 270, i got one of each.

The 260 was my backup elk rifle...but the 9.3x62 spoke  first.  Brain shot at 93 yards, with 286 gr PPV  bullet and elk never moved.  It could have been brain dead...but we couldn't find the brain!!!!

16" bunker buster first choice

06 does all, 270 works, but 06 is the better choice and better assortment and availability.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

A 180 grain projectile traveling at 3186 feet per second would be a good option. Damm, That's a lot of powder to get it moving.

Your rifle is really impressive.

Yet it's 4-10 grains less than the 7STW, 7RUM, or 28 Nosler with, essentially, the same ballistic performance.

a Mulie and possibly a gopher or two --- Theres usually nothing left to confirm a kill on those, though.
