Temps have risen to -10* and 5 mph winds, of course we had to go calling.
Snow drifts as high as the truck in spots but if you picked your roads you could get around.
First set still dark and -15* and clear. we set up around a lake we fish, it was mostly frozen except where the air pump windmill vented in to the lake to aerate it for the fish. Two came in screaming from the other side, The boy let one get to outside and he shot. Good hit but it started to spin and headed back across, fell over dead inches from the open water and thin and broken ice. Crap, a very nice lookin dog laying dead only 30 yards away and no way to retrieve it. A few other sets coyotes all over but none come to get shot. Hunting a WFP lake we had two coming from opposite direction fast, A FWP worker drive up on us to tell us he will leave the locked gate open so we can hunt else were not knowing he just messed us up. Had one coming and an eagle swooped down and drove it off. By now the temp was -10 and 8 mph wind, cold. We did a great set. Two came in from 3 miles away straight up to the boy.
Finally one down and on dry ground.

Nice dog!!
We called it a day, a very good !!!

D,
Great hunting and shooting for you twoSmile.
What do you attribute this year's success so far to over last winter being a bummer for you?
Stay warm---Oooooops.  That's impossible below zero.

We were talking that over all trip.
???
We could not come up with single plausible thought.
We have already shot more coyotes than we saw last year.

There are only rabbits in secluded pockets.
The gophers where WAY down last fall.
P dogs are WAY up.
The snow is more wide spread but not a lot of it.
Maybe the huge winds?
Keeping the state predator controllers grounded,
Keeping a lot of the real coyote callers numbers down?
The lack of grass can only make the rodent numbers less?
Where we have been hunting was not as impacted by the dryness as most of the state. So I don't have a clue?
BUT all that said we have seen zero pups, all the coyotes we have been seeing and shooting are adult dogs. I hate to keep killing the breading stock.Confused

Heavy snow went 75+ miles south of us.  Got DC and Baltimore with7+ inches.

Tuned the snowblower, changed oil, bought new super snow shovel.......all sitting in the sunlight in garage!

And, no tracking snow for flintlock deer season!

With 14 inches on the ground and a hard crust, walking in anything but snowshoes is totally exhausting.  remember there is no flat land for 75 miles from me, 20-40 degree hills are standard.  still 2 days of deer left.

My body is about 10 years too old to hunt this weather.

It's 45* now at sunup, going to 50.
The GD and I are going "Long" burbot fishing tonight. The moon will be very slight and sets before we leave. Ling like it dark.
If you can get here before 3:30 pm you can come, sorry no beer, but we will have a campfire maybe, If the wind stays under 10mph.
