In this case;
338 federal VS 8mm/08. The boy has a 110 savage he thinks would serve us better as one of these. The bullet selection goes to the 338 the cool factor goes to the 8mm/08. What is the consciences here? I kinda lean to the 338. ![]() ![]() |

I've loaded and shot the 338 fereral. It was in a Kimber 84 mountian rifle, very light. Accuracy was very good, recoil OK (remember I find my 416 easy recoiling). Kills deer out to 250yards very well. Also in my collection are 2 338 mags; like them also.
But I also love my 8x57mm BRNO. Both 338 Federal and 8-08 are good cartridges. Thoughts on 338 Federal: A standard cartridge, easy to reload, fits in a short action rifle, made from the 308 case. Lots of good load data available. Contrary to gun writers it is not nearly as powerful as the 338 win mag. Thoughts on 8-08: A total wildcat, little load data, would fit a short action. Not much to gain over the 338, limited bullets. If your 110 is long action (most are) I'd suggest either the 8x57 or the 8-06; if you want a 8mm rifle. If you action is one of the few Short actions 110, then I'd opt for the 338 federal.

For a few years we tossed the idea around but it was always the 338F. BUT now I think he has 8mm envy. He Really likes mine, not that there is any comparison. I think we would be well served by the 338. He has a 35 Whelen and likes it, kinda like a 338/06 would be.

The Savage 110 action is BIG and heavy, got one in 338 mag. doesn't set u for lightweigh walk-around gun.
But it would make anice rifle with a 22 inch medium barrel and a 8x57 Mauser chamber. If it is a short action, I believe it caan be converted into a long action fairly easy.

Bear has some valid points. I would lean towards the 338. Available brass, loading data, better bullet selection. But, I would only get a 338 Fed if all I had was a short action to work with. If I had a long action with a standard bolt face (i.e. 30-06) then I might go with the 8mm06. That would be very close in performance to an 8X57 (8mm Mauser) maybe a slight edge with the '06 based case being slightly longer.

If I had a long action looking for a cartridge I'd look close at the 370 Sako (factory made by Federal). It is 9.3x66 rimless sort of equal to 375.

My long action "need" in a custom build is a 6.5-06. Don't ask me why...

Not looking for another mag. I'm not sure about the action I think it is currently a 270. Have 375 H&H and a 338/378 and a 338 Lapua.
I think a 338 fed would be cool for deer and such, but a 8mm/06 would be too.

If you Savage 110 rifle IS a .270W then it is a long action. Best to go with a 338/06 maybe in that case.
No work needed on action then...just re-bbl. Might even check with an outfit like this for the job. I have one 110 short action that has been re-bbl to 7mm-08 by Shaw decades ago. Still minute of deer! Shaw Barrels provides premium-grade guns and barrels made by ... some of the biggest firearms manufacturers, as well as individuals who want only the best. Also for DIY guys like you they offer a set up you can buy and do it at home...re-bbl that is with one of there bbls. Check that out too. https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/barrel-parts/rifle-barrels/savage-110-replacement-barrel-kit-prod23300.aspx
