it seems when i was a kid, we could go to these with few crowds and not too many rules. of course, back then people went there to CAMP, not make fashion statements and watch satellite TV.

is it better now, or was it better then?

It was better way back when. All of the Forest Service campgrounds around here need reservations from  www.reserveusa.com    You will also neeed a Northwest Forest Pass or end up paying for even day use in some areas. You also have to have a forest pass to park at most trailheads.  When I was a kid 40 some years ago they were free and the woods cops even left you alone in the unofficial camp sites. not now. They're getting to be almost as bad as Washington State Parks.
