Today's Photograph....The Laughter That Followed Was As Dangerous In That Position As A Near fall (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
John 15:5
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (NIV)

Thoughts
The words are a little bit figurative to paint the word picture, but the message is very clear. We are designed to be part of Christ, and He, a part of us.

Have you ever seen wild grape vines while in the field? The grapes they produce are small and bitter. With Christ in us, we produce His spiritual fruit, as He trims and cares for us. (Brent B)

Action Point
Being a branch of Christ's vine needs to be seen as the honor it is. It is not difficult. But, it demands our obedience. When we're combined with Him, we produce the good results we were intended to.

Look around at real-life examples of the negative consequences of those not in Christ to see supporting evidence of this truth.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Always use a safety harness when hunting from a tree stand. You may be very agile, but there are a number of ways the harness can save you.

For me, an unplanned nap was the hazard. I had no trouble maintaining balance after waking with a start from one such unplanned snooze. However, the harness came in handy when, upon seeing the wide- eyed look of terror on the faces of two near-by cow elk, I realized I had not only jolted out of a nap from my own snoring, I had scared the cows who had fed into my location while I was "quiet". The laughter that followed was as dangerous in that position as a near fall. The solid feel of the harness locked to the tree trunk was a comfort.

Today's Photograph.... That Moment Was More Exciting (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Luke 10:20
"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven. (NKJV)

Thoughts
I couldn't contain myself. I had just arrowed the best deer of my life. As soon as the buck left my sight, the adrenaline in my system made me a basket case-- my knees were knocking, breathing shallow, and all I could say was, "Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus!"

It happened so fast, and needless to say, I was excited. I had to sit down; and although it was a balmy 65 degrees, I was shivering all over. I shook the tree stand, the tree, and all the limbs. That is the excitement that I anticipate when I go hunting; and why I spend time and effort to get a chance at a good deer.

I called every hunting friend that I knew. I emailed pictures to every friend and relative that I could think of. For the next month if anyone was interested even a fraction, I would tell them the story of the hunt. I started carrying around a picture and gave glory to God every time I looked at it. It was a special day for sure.
(Dennis W)

Action Point
When Jesus' disciples went out to preach, they soon found that they had power they had never had before, and they were excited. As a matter of fact, that is all they could talk about. They spoke of the great things that God had done through them--that they had the power to cast out demons in the name of Jesus. Jesus basically responded to the disciples' excitement by telling them that what they had experienced doesn't compare to the fact that they had eternal life.

I look at my own experience with the same thought. As exciting as my hunt was, there was a time in my life that is even more incredible--the moment God graciously took my sins away and gave me eternal life. That moment was more exciting than any deer hunt, even the biggest deer. Only God can do something like that. If you don't have a relationship with Christ, start one today.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
A deer's eyes are set high and wide on its head enabling it to see all the way around itself. When its head is down and feeding, movement in any direction except directly behind it is detectible.1

Today's Photograph.... For Those Of Us Who Love The Outdoors (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Psalm 50:23
"Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God. (NKJV)

Thoughts
For those of us who love the outdoors, we have much for which to offer Him praise. Starting my day off with a good time of devotion and praise, in a spot where I can see the mountains, sets the whole day's stage for me. It is easier to conduct myself in a Godly way. I thank God that He rewards me with His salvation.
(Jimmy S)

Action Point
Find a way to start each day praising God and see what a difference it makes for you.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When sitting around a campfire on a very cold night, try putting a small shovel full of coals under your lawn chair for added warmth!

Today's Photograph.... Arizona Ridge-nosed Rattle Snake (Ruben C)

Bible Study Verse
Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" (NIV)

Thoughts
Two days into my 2009 Arizona archery elk hunt I was target shooting in camp. I missed the entire target at 50 yards and had to go hunt my arrow down. Found it, immediately reached down to pick it up, and just before my fingers grasped it (the following occurred in about the span of let's say ½ second) saw the rattle snake, my brain registered "rattler", and then my brain screamed, "Rattler!" I affected a rapid reverse evasive maneuver (RREM) while releasing a defensive yell in order to confuse and disorient the enemy. It worked; the "RREM" that is.

The rattler was unimpressed with the whole situation and just laid there coiled up flicking its tongue at me seemingly harmless.
(Ruben C)

Action Point
But, rattle snakes are not harmless are they? Neither was the serpent in the garden. Though he didn't strike Eve, his venom was deadly nonetheless.

That is exactly how sin strikes. Seemingly appearing harmless, then it engulfs us, and we are deceived by our own thinking. Justifying our sin, we ask ourselves, "Is that really what God meant?"

II Timothy 3:16 states, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that all God's people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work," (TNIV). Read on in Genesis 2:16, "And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will certainly die,' " (TNIV).

God's word is clear. Do not put a question mark in scripture where God put a period!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
As the weather cools rattlers and other reptiles (on this hunt I encountered numerous horned toad lizards and even a Gila monster) will find their way into the sunshine to warm up where you'll find them lazing in the sun. Give the poisonous ones a wide berth. They'll more likely than not, not even mind your passing.

Today's Photograph.... Realizing That God Is Definitely In Control Of All Things (Ruben C)

Bible Study Verse
Judges 6:11-12
The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior." (NIV)

Thoughts
While traversing a small canyon while elk hunting in Arizona, I came upon a beautiful small healthy cactus growing out of what appeared to be solid rock in a small protected crevasse. I stopped and took a moment to contemplate the wonder of such a thing, realizing that God is definitely in control of all things and cares even for this small cactus that maybe even the birds missed seeing in order to steal its fruit in season.
(Ruben C)

Action Point
I immediately thought of Gideon when I discovered the thriving cactus. Read Judges 6 and Hebrews 11. Like so many of God's faithful, though he lived in a cave, felt he was the least of his family; he thrived in the most impossible of situations, and became a "mighty warrior" for God. He was commended for his faith in spite of his social standing.

If you are negatively affected by today's economic situation, don't forget that God is in control of everything. Put your faith in Him, nothing is impossible. Encourage yourself, read Matthew 17:20. You can stand on this promise.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Always carry enough water with you on the fall hunts. Even in northern Arizona, temperatures exceeded the 80's through September. I found it took me a few days to realize I needed more water than I initially thought for a day's hunt. I doubled the amount of water I carried than I had started with on opening day.

Today's Photograph.... I've Been Discouraged On Hunts That I've Waited A Long Time To Be On (Ruben C)

Bible Study Verse
Luke 10:25-28
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind;' and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "
"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." (NIV)

Thoughts
Ever been on a hunt when everything just seems to fall into place? Glassing up an animal, making the hike, then the stalk, and followed up by a perfect shot? Don't you love it when that happens? Of course we do!

How about when one of the pieces falls through? Missed shot. Blown stalk. Hey, that can happen to anyone. But how about when you spot a shooter buck on a far ridge and your body says, "I ain't gonna make that hike." The heart is there, but the body is weak or vice versa. It takes the heart, mind, and body working together to put the hike, stalk, and shot together. Leave one out, and well, you get the picture.
(Ruben C)

Action Point
There is a danger when we treat our relationship with God like cruising for cottontails along a farm field. You know, all you gotta do is see them, jump out, and shoot. Doesn't take a lot of heart, just a sharp eye and a little fleet of foot.

If we love the Lord with only our heart, we have only an emotional relationship. If we love him with only our mind, then we only have an intellectual knowledge of him. If we love him with only our strength, then we may have only a hard lined (legalistic?) relationship with him.

Heart, soul, strength, and mind. There's a reason God gives us that guidance men. Many of us can have a tendency to lean too far one way or another.

Combine the traits so we can love God and our neighbors with true compassion, strengthened by our knowledge of the truth and His promises! That means we got to stay in the Word too!

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
I've been discouraged on hunts that I've waited a long time to be on. Maybe because a lack of animals spotted, blown stalks, or worse yet, poor shooting.

For me, the last two have to do with impatience. Don't let the panic monster make you rush a stalk or rush a shot. A stalk delayed or a shot not taken, beats a spooked or poorly hit buck any day.

Today's Photograph.... Mystery Of A Big Buck (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Colossians 1:25-27
I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (NIV)

Thoughts
Deer hunters spend days, weeks, and sometimes years trying to unravel the mystery of a big buck's pattern and habits. When we actually do see his mystery revealed through tracks, rubs, and other sign he leaves behind, we've gained significant information that will help us in hunting the buck.

But remember, he is revealing himself through the signs that he leaves. We're just reading the sign - the message he leaves for us.
(Steve S)

Action Point
God has left "sign" for us, too. He has revealed His truth through the sign that we read - it's called the Bible. He mercifully grants his favor to undeserving people. That's called "grace", and it's a mystery that He has made known to us.

It seems illogical, but the truth is that we do not earn God's favor. He has revealed His mystery to us - that we are saved through His grace alone, not through the works that we do.

Salvation through works is a false teaching that comes normally and naturally to everyone. It's grace that is the new idea, the novel concept. It's grace that is the amazing thing - a mystery that has been revealed to God's people.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
One mystery every deer hunter has to cope with is the wind. One way to beat it is to collect milkweed pods. Take the floaters out and put them into a film canister or pill bottle. Use them to check the wind. They're completely natural, they introduce no foreign odors, and they're easy to see. Watch them float along the air currents, and you'll know where your scent is going as well.

Today's Photograph.... Javelina (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Luke 15:21-28
"The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' "
"But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate."
"Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'
"The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him." (NIV)

Thoughts
In this great story told by Jesus, a reckless sinner is restored to his family by the free and generous grace of his steadfast father. But, his older brother is full of resentment. This illustrates two types of sin. We can sin by acts or by attitudes.

This story about a lost son followed a story about a lost sheep and a lost coin. We fail to notice that there were really two lost sons. The one who was physically and spiritually lost is found and returned to the security of his father's estate. The other, who never left home and thought he was secure in his place, turned out to be spiritually lost.
(Steve S)

Action Point
The story of the Prodigal Son clearly illustrates two ways of life that clash. Tim Keller, in his book The Prodigal God, says, "The person in the way of moral conformity says: 'I'm not going to do what I want, but what tradition and the community wants me to do.' The person choosing the way of self-discovery says: 'I'm the only one who can decide what is right and wrong for me. I'm going to live as I want and find my true self and happiness that way.' "

These two ways are so ingrained in us that almost everyone thinks the moral choice is between being the wild-living runaway and the pleasing, obedient non-roaming son. But, that's not the choice Jesus is giving us in this story.

You can only find yourself by abandoning your pride. It took a pigsty for the younger son to abandon his pride. What will it take for the older son to abandon the pride he has in his lifelong obedience? We don't know.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If a landowner allows you to hunt on his land, do all you can to keep that relationship intact. Don't abuse the privilege. Don't invite other unwanted guests. Do pick up trash you find. Do share the bounty with him. Do send a Christmas card and occasionally give a small gift. Express appreciation and keep the welcome mat out.

Today's Photograph.... But, We Can Be Lost Without Knowing It (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Luke 15:1-2
Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." (NIV)

Thoughts
The Pharisees thought the tax collectors were lost. They believed the tax collectors had compromised with Rome by collecting taxes. But, the Pharisees themselves had made their own compromises with Rome. Their leaders, the Sanhedrin, were put in place by the Romans to control the people.

Both groups were doing the same wrong. But, only one group knew it. The Pharisees like the elder son, in Jesus' third parable in Luke 15, were the ones who were lost. They were reliant on their own good works for their favor with God, and refused to be gracious toward others.
(Steve S)

Action Point
We don't admit it when we're lost. Sometimes when we know it, we deny it. "I'm just turned around a little," I sometimes say.

But, we can be lost without knowing it. I've been lost in the woods a couple of times. I've been lost in the car a few times. It's difficult to admit that you're lost. My excuse is that I see it as a challenge. But, thinking of being lost as a challenge represents the way of self-reliance. This was the mistake the Pharisees made. They were lost in self-reliance. This is not the way of Jesus. It is not the way of grace.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Make your own reliable fire starters by filling all 12 spaces in a paper egg carton with wood shavings. Then melt wax and pour it into each space. When it dries, you can light the paper easily and the waxed wood chips burn hot enough to light your firewood. Keep them in a zip-lock bag if you take them hunting or camping.

Today's Photograph.... It's Never Too Late To Begin To Follow God's Word (Tom B)

Bible Study Verse
James 1:22-25
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing ithe will be blessed in what he does. (NIV)

Thoughts
Men are bad at thinking that we know how to do everything. We don't need to ask anybody for instructions. I'm guilty of this at times.

Take for example, you buy a new fishing reel and it comes with a detailed instruction booklet on all the parts and what to service regularly. "I don't need that," you say, and it ends up in the trash. Six months to a year later you take the reel apart to service it and can't figure out how one pesky spring goes back into the side plate. Where's the instruction book?

Another example, you're meeting a friend at a certain marina on the lake for an early morning fishing trip. "Do you need instructions on how to get there?" he asks. "Nah, I can find it okay." Thirty minutes late and you can't find the marina.
(Tom B)

Action Point
God has given us an instruction book, the Bible. It lists everything we need to know for our lives. It even has sections on what to check if something isn't working right in our lives. "Nah, I don't need it; I can figure it out."

Ten years from now, your kids don't respect you, your personal finances are a mess, or your health is failing. The list might be long or short. It doesn't have to be 10 years later, it could be tomorrow.

Where's the instruction book? Maybe I should have read the instruction book earlier. It's never too late to begin to follow God's Word.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Keep those instruction and parts books that come with everything you purchase. No matter whether it's a sporting goods item or something around the house, set up a file. Eventually you will need the help they provide. Also, don't forget to send in the warranty and registration cards.

Today's Photograph.... Sunbeams Reflecting The Glory of God Over Granger Lake (Tom B)

Bible Study Verse
Psalms 19:1-6
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

Thoughts
Have you ever thought about what God looks like? The Old Testament gives a couple descriptions:

  • A consuming fire - Exodus 24:17
  • A cloud - Exodus 40: 34
A better description of what he looks like is given through words describing his attributes in nature and the world around us. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. . . In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes it circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat."
(Tom B)

Action Point
What do you think God looks like?

I see God in every sunrise, whether I'm in a boat or standing hip deep in the surf. In a tree stand or in a duck blind, he's there.

Watch the early morning sky reflecting an orange glow on the eastern horizon. Slowly it becomes brighter. Darkness changes into illumination as shafts of light emanate out onto the whole earth. Warmth and brightness increase. Tree leaves and flowers petals lift upward praising our Lord, God.

He is the same every day, never changing. Nothing is too difficult or impossible for Him. Praise and trust Him today like you never have before. He will not disappoint.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Illuminate the darkness. If you are a night fishing devotee, check out your favorite sporting goods outlet. Take a look at the different varieties of LED lighting accessories. The small lights can be stuck on a hat, pocket, or lapel giving out a surprising amount of light. No more juggling a flashlight and fishing equipment at the same time.

Today's Photograph.... Making Us Feel Like We Can't Go On (Tom B)

Bible Study Verse
Hebrews 12:22-24
But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. (NIV)

Thoughts
This past summer my wife and I visited our youngest son, Tim, his wife Charity, and our grandson in Colorado Springs. They had just moved there. This was our first time to visit them in their new home.

They are avid hikers and love to get into the mountains, 10,000-14,000 ft. around their home. I like to hike, also. But, my hiking is confined to locales in Southeast Texas at 0-10 ft elevation.

One of things that they wanted to show us was a waterfall that wound its way down the side of a mountain that was about 14,000 ft. You could drive to about 10,000 ft, but the rest was following a winding trail to the top.

I think they could have ran to the top. But for me and my wife, it was stop, rest, and start again. The view was worth it, literally breath taking at the top.
(Tom B)

Action Point
Hebrews 12:22-24 paints a description of what Heaven is going to be like.

My wife's and my climb to the top of the mountain is similar to what we all face in our lives. There will be trials in our lives that will slow down our ascent to the mountain top (Heaven), making us feel like we can't go on.

Don't give up! Take a breather and gather your strength again. Remember who your trail guide is-Jesus. Remember what the view is going to be like when you reach the summit.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Hiking is all about being in shape. Actually, hiking can help a person get in shape. Don't try to tackle mountain trails if your life revolves around sea level locations. Start slow, building up strength and endurance. Take one to three mile walks three times a week to build endurance.

Today's Photograph....Is Your Camp Sizzling With Fire? MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Ephesians 5:25-28
Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the churcha love marked by giving, not getting. Christ's love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They're really doing themselves a favorsince they're already "one" in marriage.

Remember tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Are you ready to surprise and to bless your Sweetheart? If you forgot, you're now walking in the light of knowledge. Be Jesus to your Sweetheart beginning today, not tomorrow.

Maybe you're exempt cause you don't currently have a Sweetheart. Then you be a Sweetheart to everyone. A small random act of kindness can bless a single, a widow/widower, or a divorced one. More important than finding the "right" one is to be the "right" one.

The world will come to know Jesus by how we love them. Let's live intentially walking in His paths.

Thoughts
Years ago I was in a small village deep in the Mexican desert on a mission trip. The residents of the village were very poor and had little means to support them let alone us. So a couple of others and I decided to camp on the outskirts of town. We surrounded the fire with our bedrolls. Even in spring time in this desert, the temperature at night would drop near freezing.

Before we could turn in, we needed a plan. Firewood would have to be collected, enough to last through the night. It had to be quality wood. Mesquite was our choice since it would burn hot, long, and leave quality coals. We didn't choose the lighter wood, cottonwood, which would burn too quickly. We had to take turns, each one of us staying awake for a few hours at a time to feed the campfire. The chosen one had to make sure it never burned out, so the others could sleep in warmth.
(Brett M.)

Action Point
After nearly twenty one years of marriage, I have learned that marriage is a lot like that campfire in Mexico. You cannot just build a marriage or any relationship, like that campfire, and then expect it to continue to flourish without tending to it constantly.

First and foremost God must be at the center, as the campfire was at the center of all of us. Next when it is well established, it needs to be tended to, not just on Valentine's Day or your wedding anniversary, but every day.

Paul tells us a "love marked by giving, not getting." This means giving of you for his/her benefit. Tend to your spouse regularly. Rub his/her feet after a long day at work or with the kids. Take the time to cook a meal and do the dishes or wash his/her car and vacuum the french fries from under the seat. Do these things regularly. Let me emphasize the last point, do these things regularly.

Sometimes it can be a bit of a sacrifice, just as it was to stay awake for hours feeding the fire so others could sleep. But, the results are a long lasting, loving, and God centered relationship.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
I carry two prescription bottles in my backpack used for fire starting. The first contains several waterproof matches. The second contains petroleum jelly covered cotton balls. A single cotton ball covered with the jelly will burn for nearly two minutes.

Today's Photograph.... That Is Backwards To The Way The World Approaches Loving Others (Jimmy S)

Bible Study Verse
Philippians 2:1-4
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. (NKJV)

Happy Valentine's Day

Thoughts
Greetings! Did you remember that today is Valentine's Day? My husband and I have been celebrating Valentine's Day for 16 years. I remember a Valentine's Day some years ago that had a big fight right in the middle of it. Indulge me while I share, and don't worry; it has a good ending.

We had a special evening planned, so I wanted to get all dressed up and look pretty. Well, guess what! Getting all pretty took a little longer than planned and we were running late! My dear husband was frustrated and irritated. "What on earth could take so long? You look fine! Come on and let's go!" he said. At that moment, it dawned on me that the previous September he had been drawn for an archery antelope hunt and had sat in a blind for ten hours waiting for an antelope to wander by. He had crawled on his belly for hours putting the old sneak on them; and had, in fact, done this with great patience and enjoyment! So, what was the big deal giving me a few more minutes to get fluffed and prettied up? Was I not more important than an antelope? When I asked this question, I was met with a blank stare. I began to cry, the make-up ran; and all that fuss went down the drain. Don't worry! We regrouped, apologized, went out to a more casual make-up-free restaurant, and had a great evening.

The bottom line of the argument lingered for years: Was I more or less enjoyable than a hunt? Was I worth the wait? Those questions may sound silly to a man; but to a woman/wife, the answers are powerful and penetrating. Forgiveness created the happy ending.

I challenge you to think about your sweetheart today. Make an extra effort to tell her and show her that she's your Number One. Many times, a sweet, sincere word is cherished more deeply than a dozen roses, and carried in the memory of her heart for the rest of her life.
(Sara S)

Action Point
Paul, the writer of Philippians, explains to us that having the same mind, being humble, and putting others first are the fulfillment of joy. That is backwards to the way the world approaches loving others.

Men, pray for your wives. Ask God to show you how to love her. He wants you to succeed and be blessed.
Wives, bless your husbands today with prayer and a good dose of esteem.

May God richly bless your sweetheart and you with His love.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
For those of us who love the outdoors, may I suggest a camping trip that celebrates Valentine's Day-- complete with her favorite slippers, a breakfast or dinner she doesn't cook, and her favorite dessert (bring an extra ice chest if need be). Spend some time planning it, pay attention to the little details; and I promise--you'll have a great time!

Today's Photograph....Seasoned Successful Hunter (Jimmy S)

Bible Study Verse
Genesis 41:37-41
The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?" Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you." So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt." (NIV)

President's Day

Thoughts
Love a photo of a successful hunter with his or her harvest. But, as Paul Harvey would agree - we are usually not aware of the "rest of the story." Before that successful hunt, there were many disappointing unsuccessful hunts, missed shots, uncooperative weather ensuring miserable conditions, years of hiking the terrain, vehicle break downs, etc. That's why we can celebrate with the successful hunter and the adventure, he or she has been through a lot to earn that picture.

Most of us learn the hard way through the toughest challenges. Even waterproof matches came about after someone needed a match to strike and theirs were too wet to suffice. Look at Joseph's seasoning and note what he had to travel through to become seasoned and God positioned under Pharaoh:

  • His flaunting of his father's favor and his own cocky behavior brought out the worst in his siblings - they sold him into slavery!
  • His refusal to enter into betraying his master with his master's unfaithful wife landed him into prison for many years.
  • The chief butler forgot about him; he was stuck in prison with the Holy Spirit developing his character for another 2 years.

Action Point
We can tell Joseph wasn't sitting around feeling sorry for himself. God was with him, he was proved trustworthy, and was given much responsibility while incarcerated. He was right where God positioned him. He has set the example of what we're to do while in the midst of uncertain circumstances.

The famine in Joseph's time was over the whole earth. You're not alone in your bleak situation. But, you can take 30 seconds, commit your life to Him, ask for His forgiveness, turn everything over to Him, reserve your spot in Heaven, and know He will position you where you need to be.

Maybe you have been trusting Him all along, then rest in the confidence of God's promise given in Psalms 84:11, "For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly," (NKJV).

Our dark training will last as long as it takes for God to prepare and to complete His seasoning within us. The key to active waiting is to stay close to Him, meditate on His living word, and live obediently in His light. We know we can trust Him to build our character and develop our seasoning for our God positioned upcoming adventures. Joseph's famous response to his brothers is encouraging, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive," (NASB). God will take the good and the bad and use it for His glory and our good.

We need to trust God like Joseph wherever we find ourselves. We need to have faith believing that He has or is positioning us right where we are.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When hunting on the ground, make sure there is plenty of structure behind you so your silhouette won't alert game to your presence. Also make sure the wind is in your face.1

Today's Photograph....Johns On Watch (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Psalms 91:1
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. (NIV)

Thoughts
Being a biologist and hunter, I have studied the factors that control animal populations. Three are: food, water, and shelter. The deer population fluctuates according to the limiting factors available. In the wild, predation and hunting also have an effect on populations.

This past November we hunted whitetail deer in southern Minnesota. Due to the extremely wet fall, most of the corn had not been harvested. There were vast fields of standing corn everywhere. With all the food and shelter, the deer were hard to find. Their normal visits to the small patches of timber for shelter were rare. They were very well hidden and extremely evasive in the large fields of standing corn.

Just as the corn provided shelter and protection for the deer, the above scripture offers us an assurance of God's protection and care. Shade protects us from the sun's harsh rays; God comes between us and anything that would cause us harm.
(Tom L)

Action Point
In order to rest in the shadow of the Almighty, we must dwell in the shelter of the Most High. We must choose God for our guardian by having a personal relationship with him. Being alone with God in prayer, worshiping him, and meditating on His Word will help us develop this close relationship.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
When deer hunting adjacent to standing corn, check the traffic patterns along the corn/timber border. You will usually find an area that is well used.

Today's Photograph.... Pheasants (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Ephesians 6:10-11
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. (NIV)

Thoughts
Parts of Wyoming offer pheasant hunting in wildlife management areas. A few of the birds are wild, but most are pen-raised and released periodically throughout the season. Initially, these pen-raised birds are easy prey to hunters and other predators until they learn about the wild. The large number of predators is also a factor that limits their survival.

After shooting a pheasant, it glided into a wooded area 100 yards away. By the time my dog got there, a hawk was attacking the wounded bird. My dog chased the hawk away and retrieved the pheasant.

I learned from a wildlife biologist that these birds have the instincts, but lack the experiences in the wild needed for survival. I have noticed that once they've been shot at a few times they use some of their evasive instincts for survival.
(Tom L)

Action Point
Fortunately, God gave us the intelligence and instincts for survival. The important question is: Do we have protection from Satan or are we susceptible to his deception and temptations?

The Quest Bible notes, "Spiritual warfare for believers is fought in the mind, emotions and the will. Scriptural truth is our primary line of defense. That's why Paul frequently urges us to be renewed in our minds. Read Romans 12:1-2 and Colossians 3:1-3. The more our minds are filled with the truth of God's Word, the less susceptible we are to Satan's attack."

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Before heading out for upland birds, test your chokes and shot sizes at different distances. A large piece of cardboard works well for this test.

Today's Photograph....Shooting Clays (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
I Peter 5:5
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." (NIV)

Thoughts
After a friend moved from Minnesota to South Dakota, he invited us out to do some pheasant hunting. I had heard a lot about the great pheasant hunting in South Dakota and was really excited about having the opportunity. We hunted CRP, cattails, and a cornfield with good grassy cover. The hunting was phenomenal. Three of us shot 27 roosters in three days and with the help of Dude, our lab, we never lost a bird.

My friend shot most of the birds because he shot sooner with his 20 gage. Often he shot when the birds were in front of other hunters. We missed a few birds, so he probably thought he was helping us out. We later talked about respecting others' shooting space.

When my friend came back to Minnesota to visit, I took him to a sporting clays course. What a humbling experience. My friend never missed a pheasant, but only shot 12 out of 50 sporting clays. With some coaching and practice, he improved considerably.
(Tom L)

Action Point
There are over 100 scripture references in the Bible about humility. Christ not only spoke about humility, He modeled it in every way as reflected in Philippians 2:8, "And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross." What an act of humility and sacrifice!

We need to more Christlike in our attitudes.
(Tom L)

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you've never been to a sporting clays course, take someone with experience with you the first couple of times. Your coach can familiarize you with the course and help you with leading and follow through.

Today's Photograph.... Lone Tree Brand (Bobby W)

Bible Study Verse
II Corinthians 1:21c-22
He anointed us, set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. (NIV)

II Corinthians 1:22
By His Spirit He has stamped us with His eternal pledge-a sure beginning of what He is destined to complete. (MSG)

Thoughts
In Wyoming we still brand our horses to prove ownership. I was able to retrieve a stolen horse 300 miles from home just because he bore my brand. If I value them, I brand them. If I'm traveling out of state, it's easy to prove ownership at the borders. Even if they get lost in the wilderness, a game warden or forest service personnel is likely to come across them and I'll get them back.
(Wes W)

Action Point
I Peter 2:24a says, "Who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree," (21st CKJV). Our brand pictured above is called the "Lone Tree" brand, the cross on the hill. Isaiah 49:16a says, "Behold, I have indelibly imprinted (tattooed a picture of) you on the palm of each of My hands," (AB). That makes for a pretty iron clad relationship. I'm branded His and He's branded mine.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
If you're an "outlaw" you won't like this idea cause it will reveal you. But, we all fill out the luggage stickers at the airport to get our lost luggage back. Something a lot more convenient than three sentences of address information is to brand your valuables. I've branded a wood pistol, knife grips, leather saddle bags, and scabbards. When the grand kids inherit the stuff, they'll know it was Grandpa's.

Today's Photograph.... Cheyenne Dog Soldier Staking Himself To The Spot (Bobby W)

Bible Study Verse
James 5:19-20
My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God. (MSG)

Thoughts
Last year I talked about a Cheyenne Dog Soldier tethering himself to a stake in the ground, standing his ground, and defending in battle. After more research, I found their bravery went deeper.

If a leader saw his men losing ground and falling back or wandering out of the battle, he would charge into the middle of the battle, bale off his horse, and stake himself to the spot. His men knew he would never pull his own stake honorably. This act would induce new courage. His men would muster new strength to charge and press forward to save their leader. Only then could someone else pull his stake and literally beat him off the battlefield with his horse quirt.
(Wes W)

Action Point
I believe any sportsman reading this has a natural impulse to take a bullet for his wife, his family, or his country. There's also a bent towards watching certain people's backs in our lives. We've had examples and mentors that inspired us to charge and bale off in the heat of it. I don't think I'm ready to pass down my "Dog Rope" just yet. I have a couple of good charges left in me? I think I'll pass this on to the men that inspired me.

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
We all have stories about the big ones that got away. Father, give me the courage to go after the ones who wandered off.
