I've hit fair number of deer over the years and I gotta say Ford's generally fair better, than GMs.

To get full sized crewcab PU, with long bed, you'll most likely have to go to 3/4 ton. Anything after 04 is going to be hard to find with over 6' bed, that hasn't been used/abused as wood's crew truck. Surplus auctions of federal PUs, may offer some less often used ones. Think wildland fire protection, forest service types.

All makes have there pros and cons and you can get a great one or a lemon in any brand. As a whole this is what I have had experience with.

GM products like burbs and trucks have pretty good engines and drive trains, fair bodies and poor electrical systems.

Ford products trucks and SUV. Suv's have poor ground clearance. The 5.4L engines have issues, however, fords have the best fit and finish of all of them.

Dodge: great running gear poor bodies and poor fit and finish.

Toyota pretty much the same as dodge. Great engines and running gear poor bodies and poor fit and finish.

I have owed each of these brands and can say it all depends on how lucky you are. If you get a good one smile, if you get a bad one get rid of it and try again.

A buddy of mine recently back ended another car at just about walking
speed at a stop sign. Initially $26,000 estimate to fix. He took the
totaled car and a check for $16,000. 2008 Audi A8. Cost $1500 for
paint and body work. $500 for a mechanic to "fix" things he couldn't.
Radiator, lights, and everything else $3000 more. He walked away with
$11,000 minus some towing charges.

His looked a little worse than the Suburban not much. They wanted to
replace the whole air conditioning system because a bracket was
cracked. Also they only priced new parts not used.

The towing criteria is the tough one. I tow 6,000.

The best sounds like exactly what you got. I found it
tough to go to a PU after a big SUV, nice to have your
'stuff' inside and no tailgate. SUV has everything
accessible (over the seat).

It's hard to get a 10x4 sheet of 20 gauge sheet metal in to a burb, and you play hell to stuff in a 1/2 yard of manure in the back too...

I don't NEED a long bed. I'd like as much bed as I can get in something I want to get...

15 years ago, I decided on an SUV and trailer. I'm not
lugging that extra weight when on the road. And I'm
getting 28-31 MPG on highway, in comfort, 7 passenger Ford
Explorer.

D;

What about the great compromise, the Avalanche? I made my
choice though, X-tended cab long bed pickup. I have no
complaints with the sole exception of mileage.

What kind of mileage are you getting on the avalanche? what year? From what I read when they went to the newer tranny (6 speed it think) they were getting around 20 on the highway. I think the new tranny started in 2010 model year??

MtElkHunter;

Nope, I only proposed the Avalanche to D4570, I don't own
one. Mine is a Chevy 2500 Duramax/Allison. That's the 3/4
ton, extended cab & long bed. Not a 4-door. Very low 16's
on the highway if I balloon-foot it, have a tail wind, and
am headed downhill. Otherwise, high 14's.

What about the new Bronco? Sure it's only a 2 door for the first run, but the back seat pops out and the roof comes off to make it a truck!
