I have a 65mm Vortex Viper HD.
I think I am the guy that deaddog was talking about that's not impressed. It works ok at the range. Not great just ok. Out in the field I assume the idea is to spot game with binoculars then get a better look with a spotting scope. If I turn the power up where their should be an advantage to using a spotting scope the image is hazy or foggy. I really can't see much. This is the only spotting scope I have ever had, so maybe they are all like that. I really don't think so though. Hell, for all I know, it might have dust inside of it. That's kinds what it looks like. I have thought about sending it back to Vortex and seeing what they say. They have a no questions asked warranty. If I go that route, I will post what I find out. Howdy. Thanks for weighing in.
I am pretty sure that all spotting scopes are not created equal. The cheap one I have is a 60 power, and I can see holes better through my 20 power Leupold VX3. It's the glass. When you compare the Vortex (whose scopes I like) against the high end stuff (Swarovski in particular) the difference is dramatic. Although Cabela's does not have the Leupold Mark 4 spotter, they do have some other Leupold models. I would think I should be able to make some comparison between the Leupolds they do have with other comparably priced brands to see how the glass compares. I'll keep y'all posted and continue to be interested in other people's experience. |

I have three Vortex scopes and I do think they are good
for the money. I also have a pair of vortex binoculars. I had to send them back because one of the eye cups would just turn without going in and out. Otherwise they are good binoculars. I am kinda thinking I got a bad spotting scope. If I remember right I paid about $700 for it. I realize thats not a high end scope, but I should be able to see through it. Wing master |

I would send it back or at least call. It's all relative, to me $700 is high end scope, beyond that is just dreaming.

Looking at the whole spectrum, $700 is not high end when you consider that you can spend $5000 on one. BUT, what you describe does not seem right, and my limited experience with Vortex is positive. Vortex claims an unlimited guarantee. Send it back to them.

I did stop by Cabela's today and looked at a Vortex 20-60x scope that was pretty impressive. Priced about $1200 I think. Good clear resolution. They did NOT have the Leupold I wanted to see, so still no chance to compare them.

I'm with you Robert. That is high end in my budget.
I will take it out to the store I bought it from in the morning. That way they pay the shipping to send it back. I will post the results when I get it back. Wing master |

In this case, it's a scope with Cabela's name on it that they will tell you straight up and it's pretty obvious that it's the Vortex. Pretty sure it is the Razor HD. Pretty cool scope. Although Vortex lists it at $1999, you can find that one for around $1299.

I have made mistake of buying optics with Cabal's name on it, in the past, never again. I'm not sure if they're just seconds or have different internals, coatings, or whatnot, but junk pretty well sums it up. They looked exactly like name brand, but sure didn't preform like them.

That's really good to know, Robert. That was not a candidate for me anyway, and in general I am a bit dubious about things with store names on them. Thanks for confirming my doubts.
