I am getting to the point that I need to upgrade the scope on my Swede.
It is mainly going to be a hunting rifle, but I also am planning on shooting semi long range with it too. I'm thinking my limit for hunting is 400 yards. and i'm planning on shooting steel out to a max of 1000 yards. It's a lot more likely that I will shoot steel to 600 or 800. What magnification would you go with? Any scope brands and or model ideas would be appreciated also. After looking through several different scopes, the Leupold VX3 I LRP is my top choice so far. The only thing is that it comes in a 4.5x14 or a 6.5x20. I am still open to any other models or brands. Wing master

For hunting, I don't really like any of the LRP reticles. Either too busy, or lack windage marks. For hunting mainly and shooting steel second, I'd go with
6.5-20x50 3-i Besides being 7oz lighter, reticle is less cluttered, while still giving you windage reference points. Of the LRP reticle choices, I would go with LRP MOA 29 as it's least cluttered, or LRP's reticle choices. For steel/target primary use, this would be my choice in Leupold brand @ that price point. I've shot NF scope, with similar style reticle and it's about as busy as useful. It's easy to get lost, counting marks, but it's easy to adjust holdoff, if you can see trace or splash, from previous shot. Edited by RobertMT - 11 June 2018 at 20:59 |

Leupold's are always a good reliable choice. I have several of them and they are all good. Recently I have been using some vortex optics and I have been presently surprised at the quality of them. I think vortex needs to be in your short list to consider.

wing I think a look at Vortex options would be a good thing to do. They make some with "hunting" reticle too.

Robert plus 1.
I have both of the scopes you mentioned. Both very good. My 6.5 wears the lower range VX-3; but thinking of changing to the 6.5x20 40mm. Antelopes ar day time criters; so the good 40mm objective is fine; no 50mm needed.

Wing, I'm sure you remember shooting my Ruger Precision rifle at the gongs at CB's memorial. That had a Vortex 6x24-50 HST. I also have a Vortex Viper 6.5x20-50 which is between my HST and my Viper HS 4x16-44. If I had to choose just one of the three I think it would be the all around 6.5x20-50. You have lots of choices between Leupold, Vortex, and Bushnell of which I'm hearing good things about. Good luck on your choice.

Thanks guys.
Every scope I look at has something I don't like. I have looked at Vortex. I have a couple of them and like the quality but I REALLY don't like the zero stop. I have looked at the Nikon X-1000. That one has good reviews but I don't know anyone personally that has one that I can look through. I even looked at Nightforce. The one I thought I would like weighs 32 ounces. and the price is higher than I hoped to pay. The Leupold is 21 ounces. Like Robert, I don't like cluttered reticles. I like the MOA reticle. It doesn't have the reference for windage below centerline, but I plan on dialing the turrets for elevation so I think that would be ok. I looked at a Burris Veracity I liked it but it's big. It's also 27.2 ounces. It might be ok for a target or maybe a varmint gun but for a gun I will be carrying around that is already pretty heavy I think it's too bulky and heavy. I am trying to do enough research so that when I buy a scope I'm happy with it. I'd hate to spend this amount and not be completely happy with it. Wing master

I certainly like light weight rifles; but I don't think that the scope is the place of save onces. Every shot depends upon a good sight picture. On standing those few ounces may matter, but on a bipod/tripod they are not a disadvantage.
I like the 'uncluttered look of these scope with nothing but a crosshair (duplex); and you using calibrated turrets is good way to go. Bushnell scopes are not the best; but they are clear and bright with good mechanical adjustments. I own quit a few of them, and some are on my sub MOA accurate guns. Over the years, they have probably killed the bulk of my game.

I don't like to dial, for hunting, nor shooting steel, I use the reticle. When I dial, (beyond 600yds) I'll most often use holdoff for windage and dial elevation and gross windage only.
With my budget, this is scope I have on my hunting rifles DOA600 This is what I use for my target/steel rifles, again within my budget. SWFA 20X If I was wanting to get dual purpose scope, within my budget, I'd get LR800 |

Thanks again guys.
That does make sense Bear to think about a good sight picture instead of the weight of the scope. the part I worry about is carrying it around while hunting. Robert, I have looked at the SWFA SS scopes. I definatly haven't ruled them out. I have a buddy that has one and he says they track perfectly and are a great quality scope. he also said that the brightness and clarity aren't as good as he would like. How is the brightness and clarity on yours? That is for sure one I'm looking at. I really wish Vortex didn't use those dang shims for a zero stop. Wing master

The SWFA fixed higher power scope, would make a very poor hunting scope. They perform good for a $250 scope, but certainly aren't in same class as $1,000 scope. Besides the small field of view, due to high power, they have a shallow focus range, that work better on targets, than game.
They compare very well to Weaver T-series fixed power scopes, at a much better price. |

The general rule of thumb, spend at least as much on glass, as you do on rifle. I can't always afford that, but remember you do get what you pay for in scopes, to a degree. I know $200 scope is better than $100 scope, same as $500 vs $200, I've shot $1,000 scopes, I didn't find them twice as good as $500 scope, same with the $2,500 scopes. Both the $1,000 and $2,500 scopes were clear and bright, I didn't honestly see where the $2,500 scope was worth the extra.
I need to upgrade, to better target scope, the 20X SWFA isn't enough for 1K BR, I'm trying to justify $1,100 45X45 30mm Leupold vs $450 36x40 1" Weaver, that's 95% of what I want and upgrade in few years. |

I have heard that rule of thumb too Robert.
I also agree that when you get to the really high dollar scopes another $500 doesn't get you as much difference as the the first $500 got you. I'm just trying to find a happy medium and end up with a scope that will work for everything I want to do and I don't want to replace in a year. Wing master |

58 years ago, I bought my first rifle scope...a Weaver K-10. Scopes were just starting to be priced where folks could afford one. Having lived with those early scope, maybe I'm not as picky as newer shooters. No matter what price, I've not seen a glass that wasn't a practical optic. The mechanicals are the things I see a big difference in, and the lack of quality.
