Graf;

Resolution, ie better glass, is better than just going for the highest magnification your budget will allow.  What's your budget?

That being asked; right now but not for long, there are some outstanding deals available on Nikon Monarchs.  Nikon has revamped the Monarch line & the older models are selling out at less than wholesale a year or so ago.  I now have two Monarch 3.3-10X A/O mil-dot scopes.  The second purchased retail from Natchez for less than I paid wholesale for the first one.  Outstanding glass for under $300.00.  Go to www.natchezss.com, if they're out try SWFA or Bear Basin.

I've got a Bushnell Legend 5-15X A/O mil-dot that I've directly compared to the Nikon.  Even though the Bushie has half again the magnification, the more useable image is with the Nikon.  Now that's not an apples to apples comparison, as even now, the Nikon costs about $100.00 more than the Bushie.  Proving once again that with glass, you get what you pay for.

6x42 leupold will get'cha there in fine fashion, and would be my first pick for such a chore.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Well, without know if you are shooting gophers or moose, recommendation is difficult.

But a 3-9x is made for big game hunting in exactly that range.  It is the most popular for two reasons, best all round and lowest cost per x.

I have Burris, Leupold and Bushnell in 3-9x and can't say anything but good about them.  I've found that your age will indicate how much "bonus" power you will want to use.

A 3-9x would do nicely.  But the 4-16x like the Elite 3200 are pretty good with a 243 for chucks at that range.

We don't have woodchucks in UK, but we do have loads of rabbits.

I have a 17hmr that will just about get out to 225 yards on a calm day and I find that I need a scope with x20 mag to clearly see the target.

I use a $99 Simmons White Tail Classic 6.5-20x50.

Pisces;

Welcome to the board, glad to see you here.

That Simmons is a very good bargain at that price.  I've got an older Simmons Whitetail 4-12X A/O on a rimfire that's a great piece of glass in that application.  I've had it on the gun for about 8 years & it's been solid.  That being said, I don't believe I'd ever look to Simmons for a centerfire scope.

Do you use a suppressor on your .17?  I'm aware that many in the U.K. do for pest control & small game hunting.

I would not over a 3X9.

     At 225 yards (asuming you are hunting somthing bigger than prarrie dogs).I would go for somthing in the 2X7 range.

  For 300.00 A VX2 leupold 2X7 is a very good scope. If thats more than you want to spend , the burris FF2 is under 200.00.

     So is the Bushnell 3200.   I liike the low powder so you can shoot with both eyes open.

For a straight hunting rifle there is no reason at all to get more than a 4x Leupold. If you cant hit accurately out to 300 yards with that and a good rifle all the magnification in the world wont help. One time I was hunting with a 3x9 in brush and guess what had a shot and somehow the damn thing had got turned up to 9x. Fixed power for almost my hunting. Frank

Not sure what caliber you are using, but I would recommend a 4X12 Leupold VX 1 or 2. They can be found at a reasonable price at gunshows and the like. I'll probably get an ass ripping for that, but, Leupold still has a guarentee (sp) that is hard to beat....OH!!!! Welcome aboard too. If you can't get aboard, get a plank. Kick back and have fun........................Kingpin

I do quite a bit of Varmint shooting mainly prairie dogs, and I find that I use 6-12 powers the most.  A fixed 10X might be a comprimise and in a more affordable scope like the Bushnell Elite 3200 series and gives you target turrents.  I find that most scopes will work in that power range without getting to hazy but on my cheap old .223 H&R Ultra Varmints I've used a Barska 6.5-24X50 and BSA 6-24X50 both with 1/8 MOA target dot reticles.  I think for varmint shooting like targets the more fine the cross hairs the better.

Both scopes don't have a very good reputation but they work and hold zero just fine for what I'm using them for.  I've had no problems hitting those little prairie dogs at 300 yards which I figure have to be a little smaller than the woodchuck.  I would like to put more expensive scopes on these rifles but until they break I'll keep using them.  The BSA has been on the rifle since 96 and the Barska has been on the other since 04.  I'll probably go with a top of the line Bushnell when these scopes start to fail.
