Really not an AR type guy. More for turn bolt rifles.

But a sale of new AR by Ruger at $499.99 caught my eye.

Is this a good rifle?
Is this a good price?

Is this a direct gas impingment design of a gas piston?
Does it have the stupid forward assist 'thingie'?

BEAR;

I don't know fer-sure-fer-sure, but it's probably a decent
rifle, direct impingement, with forward assist. If you
were very careful you could probably build your own for
less, maybe a hundred less. Would that be as good a rifle?
Know way of knowing without trying it, but you'd have no
warranty.

Ruger 556 are a decent entry level AR, S&W MP 15 is another. Bushmaster also makes decent entry level, stay away from their carbon 15 though.

Unless you're real careful about catching sales, you're not going to build one for much less. There's only about hour to assemble one and they get volume prices on parts. For the same $500, I've built a few, upgrading to free float handguard and low profile gas block, adds a couple bucks, but increases performance, with optics.

I've only built one "slick" side AR (without forward assist) I like the on to hang brass catcher from, not much use otherwise.

Right now Cabelas has stripped lowers for $50 and midway has complete entry level upper for $250, add LPK for $30 and buttstock/buffer kit for another $50 and you're back to your $500 by time you add shipping and sights.

BEAR;

According to what I've found, the Ruger AR15 is the D.I.
gun & the SR556 is the piston gun. Someplace is selling
the AR version for $475.00, but I haven't found out exactly
where yet.
