I was checking these out at Cabela's today.
There was a .270 for 329.00 , I was about to buy it
but passed because i just did not like the molded
sling swivel studs.
The standard models were .400 and they were a bit
nicer than the cheap one.
I came home with my money beacuse i know where i
can get the better ones for 350.
Thinking .308 or .243 if it was just me, the .308
would be the way to go.
But my grand kids want to shoot, and at 8 and 6
the .243 would be a better idea. I have dies and brass
, so thinking .243 at the moment.
Any of you guys have the American model Ruger and
what do you think of it ?   ...tj3006

It will be a while for i get it though. I have a
Redfield 3x9 to put on it.
I will need to buy some bullets , thinking 100 grain
Cup and core for now.

Tj3006;

I don't have a RAR, and no need to get one. But I do use
the .243 Hornady 75 grain V-Max bullet. It's great on
coyotes, provided you don't care about the fur.

been shooting and reloading the 243 since 1962. great round, easy to reload for.

I have done all bullets 60-105 grain.

For varmints I use Hornady 75 gr, for deer the 100 gr Rem Cor-lokt is great, very accurate in my 1:10 twist.

My Ruger has a 1 in 9 twist.
I think that is good I think i will want 3 loads.
A varmint and plinking load. Bear says the Hornady 75
grain works. Thanks for the tip.
A cup and core deer load and a Partition or tsx
load .
A very well respected hunter I know says the 100
grain Nosler Ballistic tip.
Likely to buy some bullets today.

Ok here the thing!!!

I now have a 6mm rem but I shot a savage 243 for many years.
Personally I feel your NOT using the full potential of the round using a 100 gr bullet...
95 maybe but I used an 85 gr for many years Check out the energy curve. You get a lot more out to the animal with a lighter bullet going like Hell then with a 100 gr lumbering along.
I have killed MANY deer at or over 300 yards ,BIG mule deer, with an 85 gr Spear . I'm all in on the 75 for varmints but there NOT a fur bullet.
In the six where I can get a ton more speed I use an 80 gr tts Barnes going 3800 and for coyote/ prairie doge I use a Nosler 55 gr going 4200. BUT it is a little ruff on fur too
JUST saying!!!
Remember: Four boxes keep us free ,the soap box, the ballot box, the jury box, AND the cartridge box

I load 100 gr Hornady's ,with a good dose of H1000,accurite and mean on deer.
I looked at the RAR ,the stocks don't feel good to me,but now drop it in a wood stock and maybe. How does it shoot ?

Fella's;

I agree with D as to using a bit lighter bullet. The one I
go to is the Speer 90 grain spitzer, catalog #1217. It was
originally designed to provide a good hunting bullet for
the old 1:12 twist 244 Remingtons. Lighter, yet tough
enough to easily do the job on mule deer. I've used it, it
works, very well indeed. And you reap all the trajectory
benefits of the well over 3000 fps attainable because of
it's lighter weight.

CB you are not the 1st to recommend that 90 grain
speer. I bought a box of 100 grain siearra boat tails
and will load some on sunday.
I mounted the 3x9 redfield revolution in weaver
rings.
The whole set up cost me about 515.00. If it shoots
well i will be real happy. In this day and age to get an
american built rifle and scope in that price range even
used would be hard.

Amazingly low cost on new bolt rifles.

In November, I bought a new Rem 783 in 7 mg with camo stock and a Bushnell Trophy xlt 3-9x scope, for less than $310.

I like my RAR in .223 R....not a lot of rounds down the
tube yet but it seems to be capable of pretty fair
accuracy. Have a Redfield 4-12 Revolution scope on it now.
Will need to explore the better varmint load.

Still developing loads for the 7 mag. First box factory (to get brass) had it shooting sub MOA.

Good trigger, not beautiful but comes up very nice.

IMHO, the Ruger American is fantastic for the money. I have a 7-08 and my Niece has a 308. Terrific accuracy, especially considering the price-tag. I'm sure with a little effort you could ring out better groups, but I have been able to keep MOA out of the 7-08 with very little trouble.

A special on Rem 783 in 7 mag got me. unbelievable "for the dollar"; $229 with camo stock.

No worked up loads but getting 3 shot MOA with rem green/yellow factories.

I still have not shot my.243.
But i now have 3 bullets to try. The 100 grain
sierra boat tail, the 95 grain partition, and the 87
grain Hornady flat base.
I started with the Sierra over 38.5 grs of H 414.
Thinking of imr 4350 for the other 2 bullets.
