Self proclaimed. Been watching my sis and BIL's mutt while they vacation this week, it's a very lovable and bed hogging german shepherd/boxer-ish mix that loves long walks and water. Had her out for an evening pee break and she just laid by the door and didn't want in so I left her relax in the cool evening air. Next thing I know she gets up and has a drink, no big deal, a bowl sits by the door for them all to drool and dribble before reentering the abode. I walk to the kitchen and a moment later I hear the door shut as my daughter left her back in. At this point nothing out of the ordinary until my daughter follows her into the kitchen and says," Dad, she's chewing on something and I can't tell what it is".... At first glance it looked like bird feathers clinging to the sides of her mouth, closer look......ah crap!!!! Mouth full of porcupine quills! Spent the next half hour with a set of Kline dikes and forceps yankin the buggers out of her gums, lips, tongue, pallet, nose and even under her tongue! Then comes the call to my sis....all is well and she allowed me to get them all without much of a fuss. Good pooch that one. Today she was eating and drinking like it never happened and I managed to take my 870 for a walk of the grounds but alas the prickly bugger evaded me. I like seeing the cool critters in the woods as they serve a purpose like all things the big one has made, but when they get within a couple hundred yards of the homestead, that love is lost. Hope I go the rest of my days without pulling another quill.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

Porcupines kill trees. I see them once in a while while I am deer hunting. If I see one they usually get shot. Eastern Wyoming has about 4 trees and I'd hate to see any of them ate.

Well the "cute" little critter last evening about 2:30am, just after I got home and made a grilled cheese and peanut butter sammich, scratched at my door during my first nibble. I thought nothing of it til it scratched again.....flicked on the light, and sure enough the little fella was up on his hind legs at the window looking in like he wanted a dog treat or something! I woke the Mrs. and told her the goins on. Before you guys jump, let me first explain that if I was to crack off a round out my living room door at we hours, the couch will be my resting place for weeks! So we watched it fumble around sniffing her flower pots, falling over, and then getting a drink from the dogs outside water bowl. Finally it just waddled up the bank and back to the woods....gonna have to walk the 870 again in the rain.....BTW, the silly critter made me eat a cold sammich! Game on!

Been there too many times over the years with dog full of quills and me with pliers....dogs just don't know about porcupines UNTIL its waaaay to late....and they never seem to learn from the experience!
